Lamotta on points, but I could see giardello winning Most of the people with opinions of Lamotta have never seen film of a prime Lamotta. I think they would be much more impressed of the mid 40s Lamotta if the film surfaced. People have this belief Lamotta was easy to outbox. Not so. Robinson the greatest fighter of all time, rated Lamotta very highly, higher than giardello. Lamotta in his prime had a granite chin, very high workrate, he was faster, more energized, and was super strong. He also had underrated upper body movement. I see Lamotta out working and breaking down the very slick game giardello in a war. Great thread!
This one kinda depends on which version of each fighter shows up. Giardello could be wildly inconsistent but LaMotta sometimes had issues of his own. In the primes, given Giardello's slickness, counterpunching, size, and strength Hed have a fair shot at upsetting LaMotta but Giardello stayed in the pocket, could be dragged into brawls, and sometimes had difficulty with brawlers. This is a damn close fight IMO. I cant really pick a winner. Id probably give a very slight edge to Joey. Two of my favorites BTW.
We pre-suppose it is prime versions, so the version of Joey whenever you think he was best,maybe out boxingTiger? V Jake maybe the early40's?
I think Joey was past his prime when he fought Tiger. Id say Joey from the early to mid 50s when he was in line for a title shot and blew it by beating up that gas station attendant. He was beatable then but that was when he was at his best.
Yeah, I think Giardello's prime was around 1954, but maybe his post-prime style would be more suitable against LaMotta. It's too close to call for me anyway.
I would pick Joey. While Lamotta was well known for his chin, Joey's chin was every bit as good. Joey would outslick Lamotta and win a decision. They both had wins over Robinson.
