Left Hook question

When you throw your left hook, do you have your palm down or vertical?

When I throw, I feel more comfortable with the my palm vertical as opposed to face down which I did for a couple years. I decided to try it out because I heard some boxers have their palm vertical when throwing a left hook.

 

I do both, it's a matter of personal preference.

 

You prolly could have found the answer to this if you looked homie, haha.

But my coach told me to keep your palm facing down when throwing to the face, because its usually more quick, and can connect more cleanly the face. To the body, palm facing in is better because it seems easier to reach around an elbow that way.

At the end of the day though, its preference, but what I stated above is mine anyway!

 

I find if you throw palm sideways you are more likely to paw at your opponent than get a clean hit

I throw palm down. Feels more natural for some reason.

It is impossible to determine the position of the thumb when throwing a proper lefthook. In boxing there is a moving target and any punch requires a natural wrist rotation. Look at the pictures, Roy Jones is throwing a low, short lefthook where as Joe Frazier is throwing a high long lefthook. Look at the thumbs, they are not in the same position. Anybody who claims that the thumb should be in a certain position doesn't know what they are talking about.

Old time trainers said, "turn the hook over"...

meaning... you rotated it to a palm down position right before landing it to get a more solid lock on the punch...

 

Palms up or down.
It depends what part of his head you are aiming for.
Palms up -- you want to land coming slightly up under the jaw or chin.
Palms down -- you will land a bit higher coming around more rather than up.
Bottom line -- keep it short and tight and time it right.
A good left hook is a good left hook.

 

i can generate more power palm vertical and accuracy especially when in close i turn my palm to face down

left hook to the body should always be palm vertical

he held his arm out abit then locked his elbow and landed a left hook, its a hopkins trick aswell.
