I mean.... he's not wrong here. Even in his championship fights he looked horrible such as against Lee(a much better fighter) Totally manfactured conman weight bully who had literally everything in his favor and he still looked ass.
I remember him getting a handful of gifts on the way up, but not sure if Paulie was exaggerating saying he should've had 7 losses before Maravilla. I recall it being more like 3-4 gifts.
I enjoy Paulie's commentary for the entertainment value (on top of his insight). On a recap show with Chris Algieri for Pacquiao–Barrios, he reiterated how much Barrios sucks about five separate times. He also brought up the Paul–Chavez Jr. fight and said something along the lines of, “Last month I watched three rounds of Deontay Wilder. I shut it off. I'm like, ‘This guy sucks.’ You think I wanted to watch Chavez Jr. too? No.”
Yeah that jives with my memory. His record going in against Martínez was 46-0-1 (32), so seven robberies would have meant more than half of his instances of going the distance. Don't recall anybody ever claiming that Oisin Fagan, John Duddy, or Christian Solano got hosed. Molina I & II, Vanda I, and Zbik are the ones. Luciano Cuello is the only possible 5th one that I can think of. I was a big fan of Marco "Veneno" Rubio, and picked him to win precisely because I thought Jr. was such a protected fraud, but IIRC that wound up being a pretty clear win for Jr. - maybe his career best performance (but also kind of a crappy one from Rubio).
Yes I liked Rubio too and thought he could win that. I felt bad Rubio got obliterated against Jantuah in like 30 seconds on the ODLH-Hopkins undercard.....should of kept that right hand up when finishing his combo
I've seen it suggested (by a lot of Mexican fans and observers) that Rubio took a bunch of secret money to go in the proverbial tank. He barely used his right hand, his most potent weapon.
I wonder what timeline and what fights Malignaggi is talking about here. Of course quite a few of his HBO fights were controversial, but I only recall watching a few of his earlier fights. I know he had two controversial fights with Carlos Molina.
Harsh criticism but he's not wrong. Jr just wasn't an elite fighter and he lacked the skills, dedication and discipline to even come close to being like his father. His size advantage was his only best asset. Let's put it this way any other fighter with Chavez Jr's limitations most likely wouldn't make it as far he did in their career. Jr got by as much as he could because he had his father and the Chavez name to help him win through and win questionable decisions. I'll give him credit for his admirable efforts against Martinez and almost stopping him in the last round.
Quite a vociferous rant, but definitely not without merit, Paulie could've put it more diplomatically. Let's remember here that JCC Jr just did 10 rounds against Paul, a post-rehab JCC Jr, pushing 40, who looked completely out of his depth a decade ago against light heavyweights. Paul didn't hurt him once, but people think he's going to chin AJ because Dubois managed it, who has a 95% KO ratio. What a circus boxing has become.
Yes, but he stopped Lee, who was decent and ran Saunders close. How good do you have to look stopping a very good fighter. He was a weight bully though, I get it. But it was within the rules. He made the weight.
I can sort of understand Malignaggi's resentment as he was 10x superior to Junior pound per pound in every department except power - and that's only because Paulie was himself such a feather-fist; Junior's power was pretty mid - and yet Malignaggi never achieved anywhere near the same paydays or fanfare as Chavez Jr., pretty unfairly.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. It's going to take someone getting seriously hurt before these circus fights lose most of their steam. If there's no funny business here this could very well end up being the one.
