Interesting matchup. Probably about equal in talent. Donald Curry beat Marlon twice in close fights. Oscar wins a close 12 rd fight, but Starling wins a 15 rd fight as ODH fades as usual. 984-02-04 : Donald Curry 147 lbs beat Marlon Starling 147 lbs by UD in round 15 of 15 Location: Ballys Park Place Hotel Casino, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA Referee: Joe Cortez Judge: Rudy Battle 144-142 Judge: Arthur Mercante 145-140 Judge: Joe Garcia 145-140 WBA Welterweight Title (2nd defense by Curry) IBF Welterweight Title (1st defense by Curry) Notes The newly formed IBF had elected to recognize Curry as their welterweight champion before the fight. Starling was ranked #2 by the WBA. The fight was televised by ABC. Curry's purse was $250,000 and Starling's was $100,000. From Sports Illustrated: From the opening bell Saturday, the 5'10" Curry largely eschewed his vaunted jab and instead crowded Starling, beating him to the punch with short hooks and showing surprising strength by bulling his stockier opponent—Starling is 5'8"—into the ropes. In the sixth round Curry knocked Starling back with a sharp right to the head, and at the bell the challenger wore a respectful look. Starling won some of the middle rounds, doing most of his damage with right uppercuts, but Curry finished strong: In the 15th round Starling was in danger of being knocked down for the first time in his pro career. Although Curry suffered a cut inside his lower lip along with the wound that caused the swelling above his eye and never had Starling in serious trouble, he won easily on all three cards. "I showed everyone I was tough," Curry said. "People say Donald Curry likes to run a lot, that he has no heart. I think I showed heart today." Starling offered no excuses. "Curry came out with 'c'mon' in his eye, and he took some shots," he said. "He fought from his heart, and he had the heart of a champion."
Magic Man way underrated and should be in HOF. Magic Man out thinks and out manoeuvre's ODH in a tight strategic fight . MM pts.
I'll go with the house fighter--DLH--to win a very controversial decision. Starling was not connected all that well so Arum would see his moneymaker get the nod.
DLH wouldn`t fight Starling on the inside though, he`d be wary of counters and shoot his jab, which would mean he wouldn`t land as much as Curry did but he also wouldn`t be hit as much, I always feel a good answer to a high guard it to have reach and be able to counter, like Williams and Taylor vs Winky, I also think this bout would a little like Nunn vs Starling and might be another controversial SD.
Oscar's speed and quality outboxes Starling who was good, but Oscar was in the all time category in speed. Better at 140, but a great fighter. Fought the best also.
Curry would have won but Starling wasnt a winner, not in the way Curry was and would lose the big one when it counted
This could go either way, but I think Oscar might more often than not take a close split or majority verdict over Marlon. A little bit more fighter than Starling is.
Interesting. So a past his prime Pea could fight a prime DLH and win on some people's cards. In either case a very close fight. Yet, you're confident Starling could beat a prime Pea... Alright.
Could be, but the great ones usually pull it out, and Oscar has that great speed, which is what separates greats from non greats.. Elite speed.
Really can't see Starling beating Deloyhoya. But Starling had the ability to make Deloyhoya and his corner wonder if he won the dec. Probably a split dec for the much more popular Deloyhoya.
