I would go with Mercer on a UD in a lacklustre 12 rounder. Frank Bruno stated in the past that he thought Gary was a better technical boxer than himself.
Mason is in the toughest, hardest fight of his career here but he puts it all on the line. It turns in to another Mercer Cooper war. There's no kds and neither man ever gets the edge on the other. At the end it's the tightest of split decision.. A draw.
I think Mercer takes it. Mercer had better speed (and yes, Ray wasn't quick) and better jab. So I pick Mercer on points
Hmm, tough fight, and would have been a real barnburner in actuality. I honestly couldn't pick a winner here, though I'd lean towards Mercer by the narrowest of margins. Mason was a very underrated guy though, with a great jab, great power and a rock solid chin. Basically a British version of Mercer. There's a possibility he gets marked up over the course of the fight which would allow Mercer to take control, but realistically this could go right down to the wire.
Ray gave the prime Lewis fits, Holy a good fight and was an Olympic gold medallist. That's a good pedigree and us Brits always came up short against Americans back in the days when they took boxing seriously. Mercer UD or maybe even late TKO in a fight between two of the good guys.
Lewis wasn`t in his prime because he developed more under Steward as time went on, this was one of his early fights under Steward, I remember Manny gave Lewis a B+ when he fought Morrison which was near to when he had this fight, having said Mercer gave Holyfield a scare and landed more jabs against Lewis than Mason did, so I see the same thing happening if he had fought Mason.
