my whole point is this... benn was clearly a gifted fighter and it's not my meaning to pull him down in any way. it was just a means to an end when the thread started when i saw the 'comparison' with mayorga to highlight why a fighter of his talent never hit the US in earnest and built up a fanbase to court the networks and cement his place on the international stage. i just think it's a shame that british fighters (i know other countries do it too, but considering the talent cming out of britain i think it stands out) too often fight out of homefield. it shouldn't make any difference to making big fights but it does because the real muscle to making big fights against the best fighters in the world comes from being marketable on the world stage. it's why oscar can retire for 2 years if he wants to and come back and fight for a title. i know i'm pissing people off the way i say it sometimes but i was hoping someone could hit the nail on the head before i had to spell it out.

because toney was more 'touchable' after that and still a well recognised figure in the US. beating him would have garnered a whole lot of respect and opened so many doors.
Regardless of fighting at home, did he fight world class opponents? You know, you don't have to take the thread off on a tangent when its about something as simple as styles, or just flat out lie to make your point. Create a thread on British fighters.

fair enough. i'm not american by the way. but sometimes pushing people in a corner gets the honest response you're looking for. the insults will always slide off me (though i understand why people throw them at me sometimes). thats not what i'm trying to pull out of people though. we all have some nationalism in us.
Well, imo, Toney beats Benn and badly. I think it would been a better scenario to have Benn v Jones (punchers chance and all) while Toney fights Eubank. But didn't Toney move up straight away after that defeat anyway? I'm not really sure what else Benn could of done. He seems to be one of the most respected British fighters of recent years. He fought plenty of world class opponents and in America aswel.
yes you're right. but when you come to the negotiating table its how much 'weight' you bring with you that determines if the fight will be made for the most part. its unfortunate for fighters not in the US (or based their), but that problem is also multiplied by greedy local promoters outside the US who are more interested in a steady income than their fighters' careers. thats not to say that the fighters themselves can't change that.
sorry mate its bull****. benn fought 3 fights on the bounce in the states, to build his profile after the watson beating. he then came back and lost to eubank. so it would seem the good fighters were over here too, believe it or not. and before you knock who he fought in america one was iran barkley and one was doug dewitt, both, you guessed it, world class. you've picked the worse possible brit to bash here in nigel benn.he was fearless.
