how do you guys rate this guard the left hand protecting your stomach with your left shoulder covering your chin and your rigth hand up at your rigth ear

i've experimented with it and think it works brilliant especialy against the ropes alot of people say you need to have good refelexes to use it but i dont htink you need that its quite a tigth guard

You will need good reflexes when your in there with someone who knows how to score against that gaurd. yes it has its advantages but only if your ready to counter when you make them miss or when you block a shot, but keep in mind your left hand is down low, you use that shoulder to block the right hand and every now and then one can get through.

yeh i know you can be hit using it by the right but the hardest thing to block is a jab then a left hook

to me it makes it easier to counter and roll w/ punches. if ur in there against somebody much bigger than u or very heavy handed, it's better probably to keep ur hands up at first until u get a feel w/ what they're working w/. that's my advice for that

Its a technique that is only to be used by skilled boxers who know what they are doing , it works well if you know the plan!! but if you just use that defence you will get taken apart !

I find it very useful, as long as you remember to not always slap away the jab, he'll feint it and hook off it, and duck for the right hand that they will inevitably be throwing a lot.

I think it can be highly effective, but in order for it to be so, the person utilizing it has to have good footwork and reflexes. It's definitely a more advanced technique, but I've found it to work brilliantly against stronger/slower/bigger opponents. You are a bit more mobile and dynamic in what you can do, easily parrying shots with your right (back..w/e) hand and sending a counter left hook up from your waist (again, practice lol). I feel a lot looser when I use it, and can defend and counter more effectively, as the opponent is less certain of what angle you will strike from (as opposed to full guard). Also, after using this guard well, you can switch to full guard, which will throw the opponent off. From here, landing jabs and left uppercuts will be fairly easy. On the whole, it is very good if you know how to ward off shots quickly and smoothly, along with possessing some good speed.

strrrng thats exactly how i use it just occasionaly to throw my opponent off and i use it when i go against the ropes because you can make people look stupid by countering off the ropes and letting them lunge at you then check hook themn on to the ropes

nope not really. you have to adjust and be more aggresive. what makes the guard a hard thing to hit is that becuase what ever punch your throw you leave an opening. if you throw a right hand you'll hit the shoulder if you throw a left hook the right hand will cuff it or block it.if your a southpaw and your against a half guard then throw 1-2's all night.the left cross is very hard to parry or block if you get tagged.mayweather used it very effectivly against mitchell. just kept pacing foreward. not giving mitchell enough room to land the striaght punches.

now for the southpaw who uses it.
i'm a southopaw and i do use it...but with a pinch of salt. you cant rely on it. on the inside it is very effective becuase hooks are all that matters at that range. but on the outside i use a high gaurd. all the disadvantages of being on the outside are doubled when southpaw and in a half guard. you cant roll the punches. so you roll the wrogn way and a ritgh cross lands on the button...not a smart thign to do.

if you do do it. i suggest you jab and bop to your right becuase their left hook is almost completly nullified by this also the orthy right hand is too far away and will be easy to see coming and if it does come it will have little power on it at that range and awkward position...it can snap ankles if you slip a left cross when they are in that position.

if a jab or left hook comes, walk into them while covering with the right shoulder and land a right uppercut

It's really only used by black fighters or fighters trainned by old school ghetto legends.

The Slick-Ness of a black fighter... as Bernard Hopkins would say..

I use that style all the time actually and I dominate rounds with it. Granted im 6'1 and 165 pounds, but as long as you're good at keeping your distance when useing it you'll be fine. My trainers now however hate me doing it and yell at me constantly not to do it. Its how I first learned when I lived in Milwaukee though so Im most comfortable with it. Mr Kool, Im white and use it... I was one of the only two white guy at my gym in Milwaukee though so I kinda see your view...
