Mayweather's had great longevity, but so have other recent boxers. Boxers are lasting longer these days for a variety of reasons.
I agree. There's a group of people, mostly over 40 who just can't stand him. While he's a bad person, in the ring he's brilliant. IMO Mayweather retained his speed the best. You'd be hard-pressed to find a faster boxer at age 38. If only he'd fight GGG at 155 pounds. Just imagine the PVV numbers. You'd have Mayweather fans, GGG Fans, fans who want to see Mayweather lose, and fans who want to see GGG lose.
And under appreciate him as well. He's by far the greatest fighter of our time and most people couldn't wait to see him leave.
No his oldest age was 38 in his last fight, not quite 39. And it's his last 12 fights were he's been 30 or above.
If Mayweather fought and beat GGG, he would have a fair claim to GOAT. I don't think he wins that fight though.
Not in my mind. Besting an outstanding contender a weight class above your weight doesn't add a huge deal. It does the opposite. It subtracts from the legacy of Golovkin. Who was that guy, Arujo was it? Outstanding contender to Carter I think. On a hot streak, favoured to destroy the overrated champ. Look what happened, noone cares now about Arujo.
Yeah, you're right about Mosley. My mistake. I mean't his opponents ages as far as those that were in their 30's.
Golovkin is just a phenom. His punching is insane. What about if GGG KO's the winner of Cotto/Alvarez before beating Mayweather? It could be Mayweathers "Rumble in the Jungle" moment.
"A weight class above your weight"? You're not forgetting that welterweight itself was a few divisions north from Mayweather's prime, right? (again, hearkening back to our raison d'être for this very thread, on the matter of his longevity...he probably had satisfied criteria for Canastota, objectively speaking, at 130 & 135 alone...) What you said there implies that Floyd is a natural 154lber, which is pretty far removed from true. ...and we're talking about the "man" at middleweight, whose name has been put (by some) in the conversation with Hagler, Monzón, B-Hop, Fitz, and SRR despite having very limited available competition upon whose skulls to stomp out a legacy - not a mere 'outstanding contender'.
I'm not forgetting that no. I don't imply that neither, but when comparing with past greats we should remember there were fewer divisions. But he is an outstanding contender. I'm a world of fractured titles he might be a champion but in a world of one champion per division, he's yet to elevate himself above contender status. He's a "pre-Patterson Liston" right now. Cutting a destructive swathe through the division but yet to capture a meaningful crown. As I said, beating Golovkin would not make Floyd the goat for me.
Then yes. Golovkin is a bona fide MW great. That probably is enough in my mind. SFW, LW, WW, LMW, MW. That's some good going.
