Who wins right now ? Lets have this fight happen. We all wanna see it. When I look at this match up I see Werdum as like a lesser version of Franklin. They are a lot a like but Mir is a little better in every aspect.
Werdum lost to Arlovski. Mir on his worst day could KO Arlovski in one round like he did Kongo. Mir is the better stand up fighter for sure. Mir Ko'd Cro Cop, and Nogiera, he knows how to KO Pride fighters. It is more even on the ground but I still give an edge to Mir.
The Arlovski that Werdum lost to certainly could have beaten Mir. Mir also didn't knockout Kongo. Today's Werdum is the better striker. His attack is more varied, and Mir is very slow these days. Nobody is going to agree with you that Mir has the better ground game, because he doesn't.
He had Kongo basically knocked out already and dropped from a punch, then choked him out cold. That is just how Frank rolls. Oh, please. Nobody in UFC history has more submission wins then Mir period. Frank has a highlight reel of limbs snapping. Who the hell has Werdum ever Ko'd... Yeah exactly
Frank has an excellent ground game, yes. However, Werdum's is better. Do you really think that Werdum couldn't sub the likes Hardonk, Tank Abbott, Lesnar, Sylvia, so on? Also, I think Florian has the record for most subs in the UFC, but I could be wrong.
Werdum would defeat Mir, and most likely do it inside the distance. Mir is not better on the ground. Mir is elite level for mma submissions, but he has never been anywhere near being one the best submission heavyweights in BJJ. Werdum has been on that level. It's a lot like the Diaz Brothers, and their boxing. The Diaz' brothers hands get the job done in mma, but they're never going anywhere as boxers. The only thing Mir has on Werdum standing is power. Werdum has really improved his striking area over the years, and would beat Mir in this area as well. Mir's only chance is a powerful shot to the chin, but I wouldn't count on it. Werdum has a solid chin. He has only been stopped inside the distance once, and that it is when he ducked right into a JDS uppercut. Mir's chin? Not so good. I think Werdum catches Mir with something standing, drops him, and either tko's or submits him from there. Probably in the 2nd round, but it could come faster. Werdum is not as good with his hands as Dos Santos, but he is less afraid of Mir taking him down. Werdum will take more chance standing. I could see it being over in the first.
Werdum has had cracking stand up lately. Mir has had a bit of a run, but his chin is shaky as ever. On the ground it would get interesting, but I'd be backing Werdum there as well.
I've been very impressed with Werdum lately. His standup seems markedly improved. When I watch Mir fight, no matter what's happening in the fight I'm always expecting him to either get the sub or get KOed cold at some time during the next 20 seconds. Today's Mir vs today's Werdum? I pick Werdum. Anything can happen on the ground - it's laughable to suggest that anyone is safe on the ground against Mir. But I figure Werdum is much better on the feet, isn't any less dangerous on the ground, has a better chin, moves a lot faster and has a much better gas tank. :smoke :hat
So Werdum gets one KO in his last fight against a second rate opponent. Now all of a sudden he has good standup? Mir dropped Kongo, Nogueira, and Cro Cop all in recent fights.
None of those fights mean anything. :bart Kongo's a bum and Scurla could easily beat up the UFC versions of Big Nog and Cro Cop, they were that shot and useless. :good :hat
Outside of the first round, Werdum was more comfortable standing with Bigfoot, he did much better than anyone expected on his feet against Overeem (overall, they both looked bad in that fight), dominated Roy Nelson in an almost entirely standup fight, and knocked out a very durable Russow. His striking has improved a lot over the years. Mir looked awful in the Cro Cop fight until that big knee landed. Mir has more stopping power, but that's all I can give him.
