As I've always maintained, Monzon would be too clever and awkward for Hagler..he was more cool and composed and would have used such assets as his reach, height and power, along with his great ring smarts to frustrate, at times shut down and confuse hagler...always predicating his tactics with the use of his very effective, somewhat hypnotic jab, and judicious use of his right. Hagler could be taken off his game by a few select opponents that he met, i.e., Leonard, Duran amd to an extent Antuofermo (1st fight)..all very different styles of course, and Monzon certainly would be able to turn this trick too....plus, Monzon "fought tall" better than just about anybody...certainly better than Hearns..and unlike Hearns, Monzon had a world class chin as well.
Hagler had a head like a brick, but Monzon's right hand was lucifer. He was tall and very skillful. Damn, Monzon by UD.
Monzon's trombone jab and talent for "octupussing" made it very difficult for an opponent to reach him. He had a great right hand too, much like Hearns. Unlike Hearns, Monzon's chin was durable...and hands were relatively slow. This would be something I see Hagler exploiting. When Monzon throws the jab, I envision Hagler slipping under it, countering to the body, and getting out fast. Once Marvin gets into his rhythm, he'll gradually turn the fight in his favor. Hagler by UD...or 14th round TKO. I think he would chip away at Monzon's ribs and slowly but surely wear him down.
I dont believe Monzon's right hand would have any greater effect than Hagler's other opponents. In fact, I think Hearns' right was sharper and quicker. If Hagler comes on strong as he did with Minter, Lee, Obel 2, it could all be over quick but if Hagler shows too much respect and slows the pace it's monzon's fight all the way
How are you RR? Do you think he could take out Monzon as quickly as he did Sibson, even given Carlos' grabbing?
Fine thanks. Good to be back at ESB I see you picked up on Monzon's subtle defensive tactics. These are meaningful survival skills which have stymied many offensive fighters. Monzon would do well to avoid exchanges with this beast but if it came down to matching skill for skill with monzon, I see no reason why Hagler could not box just as effectively. Hagler's reach was every bit as great, with even better lateral movement and with much more impact on his jab. I've seen Marvin just about tear of heads with it, open cuts with it, and is every bit as effective at scoring points with it. And that right hook I've seen take down fighters surprisingly quick. I think the fans would be shocked out how this would turn out. So basically it comes down to my belief that both defenses are about equal but that Hagler had superior and more verstile offense (Hagler more effective when on the move)
Hagler decision. the fight would go the distance because both had good chins but monzn was slow and wasnt defensively tight. hagler would be the hardest and most pressurising fighter hed ever face. too much for escopeta.
