Against Arsen Martiyrtrosian (or however you spell it). Not really a test and certainly not a step up but I won't get on his case for that. However, he's likely to have to fight Martinez as a madatory about 6-8 weeks later so I don't see the sense in taking the fight. It's not like he's going to cash in with a giant payday at the local sports hall in Nottingham. Munroe handled Martinez really well the last time and took him to school. Martinez is still really dangerous, though, because he can really bang (although he can do nothing else) so I don't see the point in taking a fight so close to the mandatory. Does anyone know if Munroe has given up the bins and gone full time yet or what?
I don't know, but I feel he has plenty of potential and ought to be encouraged to go full time. I would say he is fringe top 10 at present, and is only still learning the game. I don't like this whole 'easy first defence' thing, and this is two easy defences in a row - he would have been better getting an immediate rematch with Martinez or unify with Matthew Marsh for the British title (I know it isn't a true unification - but you get my drift).
i saw martinez fight in Ireland a couple of weeks ago and he looked very average, Munroe would beat him easy again.
Why the hell is this guy a dustbin man when he is supposed to be the best super bantam in Europe? It's disapointing to me. He should be fully dedicated to the sport and aiming at world class.
He might need the money Also, being in a full time job might keep him on the rails - a lot of them would spend plenty of time in the bookies or in the watering hole when out of training. No doubt he will have his reasons. The division will be weakening shortly and I feel there is a real opportunity for him
I don't buy that. There must be another way for him, he should have earnt enough to look after himself while he boxes. There are far worse fighters full-time pro. It doesn't exactly suggest he has much confidence in his own ability.
Perhaps he finds certain elements of training boring - and makes up for them hulking bins around. I am not saying you are wrong, merely trying to come up with reasons why. I have no idea how much he might be making, he is a fairly new addition to the top level and come pretty much from nowhere. Being on the bins pays just under £20k a year I think - not much to be living on these days.
I think he must still need the money. He's only had 15 pro fights and the Martinez fight was his biggest by far so he can't of earned that much.
It needs to be said that unless you're Ricky Hatton or Joe Calzaghe, on the British front at least, you’re not going to be making the kind of money people think you’d make. I don’t think Ren cleared, after tax, payment of promoter, trainer, manager, etc, much over 15k for his last defence. He is looking for a sponsor. But he likes his rounds on the bins and it keeps him super-fit (he runs between the bins whilst the rest go in the lorry). Besides, what can he do as a full-time professional that he can’t in his present climate? Run more? Hit the heavy bag more? Spar more? Of the full-time professionals you can name, except the likes of the Hattons, Calzaghes, etc – the world champions who have been handed big money for a while – what have they achieved greater than Munroe? Ren goes to the gym seven days a week, trains for three hours every single night and has still won the European title. His trainer, Jason Shinfield, has a job in the day so Rendall couldn’t exactly go down the gym during the afternoon, could he? Munroe takes a month off work before title fights, by the way. At the end of the day it’s about levels – and Rendall has soared way above expectation. Munroe has got this far with natural, God-given ability; being full-time isnt going to make him any better or any worse.
Tom, before I go on, I aint having a go at the guy. What I say is out of respect for his talent. But he could forget about the bins for a year or two and go full time. **** it, if his current trainer isn't able to do it full time then surely he can get a better one or get someone to split the duties. The guy isn't a ****ing binman he's a boxer I think Maloney is holding him back. He doesn't want him to fight anyone progressive anytime soon. He's waiting for a Munroe KO Martiyrtrosian. Munroe UD Martinez. Munroe UD AN Other. Then a world title shot. I think Maloney wants to cash in all his chips at once on Munroe after 5 average defences. I feel badly for Munroe if thats the case because he has talent. But he is in a bit of a catch 22 situation. He can't dictate about getting better fights because of his current situation (both in boxing and in life etc), but to improve his current situation (both in boxing and in life) he needs to dictate who he fights. The obvious Munroe-v-Dunne match up isn't being made because both are signed to seperate broadcasters. The money for that fight would be made in Munroe coming to Ireland in a newly built, sold out Point Depot (10,000 bums on seats). But RTE would want to show that exclusively. Sky won't let that happen. Dunne would go to Leicester/Notts but his handlers don't want him to fight in front of 1,500 in England and on Sky when they can make a bucket load if he fights here. ****ing politics in boxing again. If they fight Dunne wide UD Munroe by the way
