Norris vs Quartey

Let's say they meet circa 94-95 at a catchweight of 151.

 

I think Quartey knocks him out. He had really good pressure, a cast iron jaw and was hard to penetrate without paying the price.

 

True.. and Simon brown managed to move up and hand Norris a loss so the possibility of Ike doing it isn’t out of the question

Interesting fight. Norris had that amazing hand speed but the best way to disrupt those fast combos would be that hard jab of Quartey's. He had such a tight high guard as well, I could just Invision Quartey walking him down as the fight went on.

I won't begrudge anyone that favors Norris since I can see him winning this but if I was betting on on it, I would take the steady pressure of Quartey to wear Norris down to a late stoppage or a more likely decision win.

 

That could mean 2 different things to many people. Do you mean he dogs it and quits in the late rounds or does he attack like a rabid pitbull?

 

I meant the latter. Not in the sense that he's a mike tyson or anything, but he will stand his ground and trade with sharp, accurate punches. I think norris sticks around a little too long in those exchanges at gets hit with something significant.

 

i'd go for Quartey.

 

On a side note, and I have said this on here before. I really believe that Quartey was a hall of fame quality fighter that simply didn't accomplish enough to make it in. I think he was every bit as good Oscar and Tito but coming up short against Oscar (I scored it for Ike) and his long layoffs really damaged his career. He also got royally screwed against Vernon Forest. He won that fight hands down.

 

In 94-95, I lean towards Quartey as this was his absolute peak. (And, Norris was becoming more inconsistent.) But, peak vs peak, I think Norris outboxes Ike for a decision win.

 

A prime Norris was far better than Quartey but at a cachweight he could be too drained and might slow down after several rounds when Quartey could catch him.

 

You do realize (and I'm sure you don't) that Norris fought many of his title fights at 151.

He fought Mel Taylor at 149, in fact.

 

Excellent. I completely agree with this. Norris is the flashier fighter but Quartey can control an entire fight with his bazooka like jab. 2 of my favorite fighters to watch growing up and I'd hate to bet against Norris here...but I might have to.
