Fair play for digging that deep, mate. If I'm looking for a thread and can't see it after a few pages, I just give up:lol:. I must admit that I am a bit of a leech with this thread; I look at it whenever it's bumped, but I never comment. Another drawback is it feels like I'm sprinting towards old age when I see posts like '5 years ago today':-:)lol:.

Still, it's another one of your top threads, Mandanda. I will continue to view even if I don't contribute:good.

Buster banjoed Mark Kaylor over here in a major upset at the time. Drayton went on to win a version of the 154 title so looking back it wasn't that much of a surprise.

One for the old timers amongst us....

On this day in 1977, the final fight in the magnificent career of Carlos Monzon as 'Escopeta' decisioned Rodrigo Valdez over 15 rounds in Monaco in a rematch of their fight one year earlier (which Monzon also won over 15).

This is part 1 but there are 9 or 10 to follow which i won't post and clog up the page, just follow through youtube :good

30 years ago today....Tommy Hearns put on a brutal and brilliant performance in battering the feared Pipino Cuevas, who had been on his own reign of terror in smashing his way through numerous contenders.

    Sensational.

The 2nd installment of the best boxing trilogy i've ever had the privilege of witnessing, as Israel Vazquez stopped Rafael Marquez in the 6th round to regain the WBC Super Bantamweight Title and go 1-1 in the mini-series.

On this day in 2006 Juan Manuel Marquez won the WBO Interim Featherweight Title in a 7th round stoppage of Terdsak Jandaeng.

On the undercard, younger brother Rafael Marquez retained his IBF Featherweight Title against Silence Mabuza when Mabuza's corner pulled him out of the fight after the 9th round.

On that same evening, from a card at Madison Square Garden, Vernon Forrest took a widely disputed 10-round decision against Ike Quartey and on the undercard of that fight Andre Berto went to 14-0 with a first round stoppage of Roberto Valenzuela.

    6th August 1946

The death of arguably the best fighter Scotland has ever produced, former World Flyweight World Champion Benny Lynch. Between 1932-1936 Lynch established himself as the undisputed World Flyweight Champion, only losing his title on the scales in 1938 when his hard drinking lifestyle caught up with him and he failed to make the weight.

From Wikipedia - "Benny Lynch's boxing career was over by the time he was 25 and he battled with alcohol for the rest of his life. He was a pathetic sight in the streets and pubs of Glasgow where people pressed drinks on him when a square meal was what he needed. The man who had so much talent died in 1946 from malnutrition, aged 33, a lonely misfit in the city that loved and broke him."

    Overall record 81(34)-12-15

    What a tragic story. :verysad

Meanwhile on this day in 2005, Jeff Lacy retained his IBF Super Middleweight Title in a 7th round stoppage of former WBC champion Robin Reid. On the undercard Chad Dawson went to 18-0 with a 3rd round stoppage of Ronald Boddie and John Murray went to 13-0 with a 6-round points win against Johnny Walker.
