Punch resistance is about toughness, determination, strong will, a strong neck, and most importanly, vision. The punch you can't see is the one that hurts the most. Tito Trinidad has one of the deadliest left hooks of all time. Mayorga put his hands down and dared Trinidad to hit him. Tito unleased a left hook that connected flush on Mayorga's jaw. Mayorga was ready for it and barely moved. Against Mosley(who is also a big puncher), Mayorga was hit with a left hook that he didn't see coming and got laid out. Nobody has been able to catch Manny with a shot he wasn't prepared for as he's moved up in weight. Even if Manny goes up against a light hitter, he will eat some canvas if he gets caught with his pants down.
Yeah, and the last time Pac was caught by surprise with a strong punch (strong combination actually) was in the 2nd Marquez fight. the fact that Clottey busted Pac's face up even though he rarely let his hands go gives me the impression that if any of the big welters catch pac with a good flush shot he doesn't see coming he's gonna get dropped.
if you're talking about the 2nd round sequence where pac was stunned, it was more of him being off balance rather than being hurt. in that fight, he was hurt more by the body shots i think. it was pac's last fight at 130 and it was becoming very difficult for him to make weight. he was, if i remember correctly, in a bad state during weigh in 'cause he didn't feel well losing too much weight.

It was probably the fact Marquez caught him with good counters and he didn't see them. I know its an overused cliche; 'the ones you don't see hurt the most', but it happens to be true, and the reason is when you don't see you can't tense the neck to absorb the shock of the punch. That is going to rattle your senses a lot more. The punches he took from Cotto were not that bad, he was actually ushering Cotto forward to test his power many of the times. The uppercuts Clottey landed were nothing but arm punches. The straight rights were good but Pacquiao probably did see them they were so long and straight, he just didn't block them in time. He's also much stronger at this weight. Any time you can eat very well and train hard that has got to be beneficial.
No problems with this. Mate I've watched this instance quite a few times and Manny looks really hurt. It's just for a couple of seconds, but he's visibly hurt (can't believe you say otherwise). Of course I agree that the fact that JMM had landed a good right to knock Pac off balance just before the left, played a major role on the effect of that last punch by JMM. Can't really remember the occasion where Pac was hurt by Cotto. I was watching that fight very closely and rooting for Cotto as you know, so if a Cotto punch had Pac really hurt I think I would have noticed it. On the contrary, I remember being amazed with the fact that Pac looked as if he could take Cotto's best punch (and Cotto does hit hard) and walk right through it. Of course what you and other people in this thread pointed out about the punches that one doesn't see coming explains this in a way, still I couldn't believe my eyes. And in the fight with Cotto, Cotto managed to land more than one shot in some flurries, not single shots, still Pac looked unfazed. Is this explained by Pac's better power compared to Mayweather, or do you say that Pac landed more quality shots on JMM than Mayweather did? :think
It's been subtle, but Pacquiao has been momentarily stunned/buzzed/straightened up to varying degree/extent by Hatton, Cotto, and Clottey. He's definitely human. He just hasn't been caught with anything big enough in the right spot to make him dance. Pacquiao has shown alot more respect for his opponents north of 140. Wisely. At the lower weights he was understandably more reckless and carefree about his assault. That said; I'm still amazed at how well Pacquiao has held up at Welterweight, and I'm in full agreement with CX7.
Yeah, two months ago I couldn't even read a thread title with the name "Pac" in it. But I hadn't posted for a while and now my batteries are full. I can even make my own Pac threads.
Pretty much my impression. Pac is not superhuman. Just a great fighter, above his weight class with good fighters.
