Patterson vs. Bonavena

Many thanks Scartissue, anytime, it's a pleasure to delve into my s****book which covers the heavies from '63 - '72.

 

Whoops, who would have thought that part of a word describing a book, that one glues in clippings from newspapers and magazines would contain such a das****ly taboo word? My abject apologies, dear reader!

To be fair, Liston would make a lot of heavyweights look chinny and he was the only fighter to put Floyd down for a ten count. Every other time Floyd was KD'd, he got up. He survived Ingo in their two rematches and the likes of Moore, Quarry and Bonavena were hardly feather-fists. Part of his problem was poor balance caused by his style and those leaping left hooks. That and he was nearly always the smaller man in the ring.

So well put, I could not agree more. Compare the way Ingo despatched many others like Machen, Cooper, Richardson, yet Patterson kept getting up.

 

I honestly feel the way Patterson gets treated, by some I might add, hind sight should suggest he doesn't have a lot of chance in this fight. Understandably he had his work cut out for him, but this is a very respectful fight, regardless of how close, that highlights you needed far more than a big punch to beat Patterson.

 

Floyd was never knocked cold,...even by Liston.
