I'm not trying to compare the two mate I think Beeston was just getting at the fans who come on here and talk up Smith and contribute **** all else. Like some Khan fans or even worse Khan haters do.

Like some others say i find it hard to picture Smith picking a title up at super middle but i wouldn't mind seeing him try. Him vs Magee would of made a good fight hopefully promoters don't let other things get in the way and they can get these two in a ring.

Smith is only getting so much hate as there a couple of scousers who come on here and proclaim him the greatest fighter of all time. Its the same with scottish posters. Some welsh are deluded to but most are ok.

Its funny you don't really see it with London, Midlands, Manchester, North East or anywhere else. wonder why?

in my eyes hes a good fighter and would hold his own with steglitz and beat magee

its not like he is one of these nobheads who run their mouth off steady (fury, khan) ect

I'm certainly no big fan of Smith - Maybe because I'm a bit of a Dodson fan - I haven't really enjoyed watching many of his fights much and he comes across a little arrogant HOWEVER I have a ton of respect for the guy, he's come through hard fights and done what he's needed to do, whether he'll get to world level or not he has still achived a helluva lot (people on here really wind me up how they seem to diminish fighters as "domestic level" ****s sake winning the British title is a huge achievement for anyone and should be respected).

I am feeling that vibe as well. Only a handful of these prospects will win a world title and good luck to them. But, boxing needs good pros at domestic level, whether they are journeymen or British Title winners, they don't deserve to be dissed because a couple of their fans want to big them up.

There might be a subconscious superiority complex with some inhabitants of the UK when it comes to boxing (excluding Scots, Welsh, Liverpudlians). Perhaps, a bit like the football crowd that 'cheers' on the England team - that mentality:good:yep

A british title is a huge thing and no fighter on the planet can or should frown upon it.. I'd love nothing more than a Lonsdale belt to keep.. I bet Carl Froch values that Lonsdale belt as highly as he does that WBC title he has.. I know Ricky hatton loved his British title belt as much as he loved his IBF one.. :good

I do still think this topic is unfair but no matter if you me,George Groves,Stephen or Paul Smith then you are still gonna have people who like and dislike you no matter what.. it's the nature of the sport and while some have agendas (fans) others don't it's just the way it is.. I also reckon this topic has ran it's course...:good

I really don't think this is a thread designed to bash the fighter!!!

This is a thread to show how narrow minded SOME Smith fans are; although to be fair, the usual rabble havn't shown up

I don't think he gets too much stick for his attitude. No one islikes Smith the man.

It's just a case of his fans constantly big him up when the last two fights he's had have been dreadful to watch, and Smith has been dreadful to watch in them.

So, as I say, I think the constant negativity is aimed towards his fans, to get a rise and see what hyperbole they come out with, NOT aimed at Smith, who seems a decent bloke and a hard working competitor.

So using him to belittle his "fans" is acceptable?

Sad really....wouldnt think he is a normal family man with feelings who comes on here regularly, reads the posts, adds with his own and yet has to read about himself being made a c*nt of by people on here trying to make a point to his "fans" :good

Makes sense fella's, well done, carry on. The sport needs more of you :happy

Come of it Stephen your being over sensative. Your brother is a public figure and is he is going to accept praise he has to accept his critics to. Its part of being a pro boxer if David Haye or Floyd Mayweathers brothers were as sensative as you and came on here they would top themselves.

I can understand why certain people have taken offence and for that I apologise.

    I agree.

Professional sportsmen are in the public eye, whether they like it or not. It comes with the job. If you've just been involved in two performances that stink the house out, what will follow is negative press. Whether that be against the man himself or the fans that stand up for him.

It's life. Wayne Rooney is getting slagged off on a daily basis by the fans and press. If he scores the winning goal on wednesday they'll all love him again. You could list thousands of other examples.

Some people are yet to be won over by Paul Smith and I can see why. It's nothing personal. Being a great guy away from the ring is good to hear, but also irrelevant. This is a boxing forum. People come on to have a laugh, wind others up and discuss boxing. It's all part of the banter. If Smith puts in a good performance next time out, he can then happily take the plaudits that follow.
