Duddy has not even been mentioned since he looked bad against Smichet. Pavlik/Abraham was suppose to happen in January, but Kelly ****ed that up by refusing to post pone the Hopkins fight. Team Pavlik tried to get KP to post pone due to the elbow injury, and again due to the bronchitis, but Pav wouldn't hear of it. Now he has to pay his dues by fighing Rubio for about half of what he would have gotten for Abraham. Look for Pavlik/Abrham spring or summer 2009.
Pavlik can come back and be effective, but once Hopkins set the blueprint of how to beat him, unconsciously or consciously fighters take note of that and will fight him more like that. Look how after Hagler fought Hearns in a brawling style, a lot of guys tried to brawl with Hearns after seening Hagler succesful that way. Although to be honest, it really did not make them beat Hearns, but it meant Hearns was in a lot of brawls post 1985. Also Hearns was more diminished after Hagler, so his opponents had more openings. Hearns started to brawl more also. But with Pavlik, guys are going to box him more and study the tape of the Hopkins fight. No matter what, Pavlik was schooled and it will hurt him down the line with good fighters. It was not the weight. And people say Oscar could not pull the trigger, well Pavlik was the same in his fight with Hopkins, but we know he is not getting old. I think when a guy outclasses someone they make them not be able to pull the trigger. Look what Hearns did to Hill in 1991. Hill said, I just couldn't get my punches off. I don't know why. Same thing. Someone is making them not fight their fight.
Good points. Hopkins kept Pav off his game all night. KP did not try to open up because he was getting counter punched off single jabs. I think he knew that if he tried to open up, he would get knocked the **** out. Hopkins fought like he was 30 years old again, but he incorporated everything he has learned since then. Others will try to do what Hopkins did, but trying and doing are two different things. I do not think we will see Pavlik above 160 anytime in 2009. In the past Kelly fought everywhere from 154 to 170. (Hopkins was his 2nd fight at 170.) I'm hoping he has learned his lesson about random division hopping. when you're fighting cans, it works, but the world class level is a different story. Not many can do it.
For Pavlik 2009 is a year he MUST impress and make a statement in, after a brutal one-sided loss like that his hype train is nearly over and only another major win will bring it back to life. Pavlik should take on none other than Abraham after his fight with Rubio, if he scores the victory there then he's definitely back in the big picture.
I agree. He needs to take on a few exciting gatekeepers at 168 before getting serious. The body needs time to put on the extra 8 pounds. Hit the gym and put on muscle mass. Pavlik vs Andrade at 168 would be very exciting.
I feel pretty confident in saying Pavlik will lose to Abraham when they meet. If that bout doesn't happen in '09 I'll be pretty disappointed.
I hope so. I love watching Pavlik in AC. It was amazing watching him KO Taylor and then get schooled by the Old Master.
I see that fight as 50/50. Pavlik will have to weather a serious storm or two from AA and that will determine the outcome.
It was one of the worst carreer decisions to go in the ring with Hopkins. Pavlik was flying high and could have made a great legacy as he looked invincible at 160 with only AA as rival. That fight ruined the American boxing future more than it already is.
his first move in 09 should be to fire jack lowe then fight rubio then fight duddy then go for abraham
