I'll state from the off I picked BHOP to take it on points, its all a question of styles. That said I allso pointed out that I thought Pavlik is a middleweight and no more, just like Hatton is a Lightwelter weight and no more.

It is absolutely true. Hopkins carry about 7 -8 kilos more natural muscle mass than pavlik. Hopkins was ripped at 170. Pavlik was quite smooth at 169.

Same thing with the Oscar fight. Oscar was WAY out of his natural weight class. 72 kilos was way too much for him. Hopkins had an even greater advantage there in that fight.

Kelly must go back to middleweight. And it is not exactly the case that his training methods facilitate great muscle gains either. *All his sledgehammering and all the other stupid so called functional training stuff he does. As if flipping tires and throwing sledgehammers is going to make him a better boxer. Cant belive that his folks encourage him to do such things. It is not making him a better boxer. It is not doing anything that ordinary weighttraining cant do. And it is injuring him. oh well his choices

Kelly isn't ripped at 160 either, Hopkins was. One guy is just more muscular.

The Oscar fight was at a catchweight of 158 lbs. Oscar weighed in at 155(or 1 lb. above the JMW level that he had been fighting at for years). Hopkins weighed in at 156.

I agree with most of this.

Agreed, and I love Hopkins and am happy he kicked ass on Saturday.

What happened in this fight was what happened with Hatton-PBF: The guy who called the shots on what weight the fight would be at saw that the guy moving up in weight was not the same fighter at a higher poundage. Hatton sucked vs Collazo and Pavlik wasn't the same in the second Taylor fight. PBF and Hopkins took note of these occurrences and they made the corresponding calls to have KP + RH go up in weight. Smart choices.

That's all part of the strategizing, and fair. But it does bear keeping this in mind when analyzing the matches.

In all honesty, the weight might have made some difference to Pavlik. But not that much difference.

He loses against Hopkins any time at any weight. There is no shame in that. It's just styles.

Ok let's say Pavlik and Hopkins both fought at 160 on Saturday night. So instead of the outcome being 33 out of 36 rounds for B-Hop it would have been 30 out of 36. Happy?

    First off, Floyd tried to fight Hatton at 140. Second, Hatton is the one who called out Floyd. Third, look at what Loew said before the fight;

"We could have been like (champion) Arthur Abraham and stayed at middleweight and waited for fighters to come to us. But in one or two more fights, Kelly's going to move up to 168, and if there is nothing attractive there, we'll go to 175,"

"I think their people (Hopkins' camp) made a mistake taking this fight at 170,...They thought Kelly would have problems getting up to 170. But Kelly walks around at 172-173, and right now (Oct. 6) he's training at 169-170."

So clearly Team Pavlik doesn't think the weight is a problem. Furthermore, everyone and their mother was picking Pavlik in this fight. The weight excuse is garbage. Pavlik took a comprehensive beating. Using weight as an excuse is flimsy at best.

it is how golden boy do things, make the smaller man come out of his comfort zone so that the golden boy fighter wins, calzaghe fukd that plan up oscars sunshine ass, but on this occasion i think hopkins just fukd pavlik uo, and i kinda had a thought it would happen, coz i won all my vcash on it!! If that was calzaghe in the ring with kelly, he would have taken kelly out of there

pavlik might not have been at his best for some reason, but it shouldn't have been because of his weight. on 24/7 he (or his team) talk of walking around at 175ish. he's 6'2 and 170 for an athlete (with muscle mass) is way light.

    - Pavlik was very good in beating Jermain Taylor at 166. This fight was a massive 4lbs north of that.

Agreed -- I've stated many times that a really fast and slick counter puncher, with enough power to keep Kelly honest, would take his zero away. I also said that Kelly would suffer some losses at LHW. I had no idea that Hopkins still had enough gas in the tank to get the job done. I was adamant that he did not, but I was wrong.

BHop fought a brilliant fight, and yet rather than crediting Hopkins for handing an ass whipping to one of the most dangerous guys in the sport, most posters on here would rather hate on Pavlik. That's very disrespectful to both fighters.

At this point in Kelly's career, if you take away the jab, you neutralize the right hand. Everything works off the jab-right hand, and Hopkins took that away.

I am a long way from throwing in the towel on Pavlik. He'll learn from this and move on. One question I do have is about Jack Leow; Can he learn from this, and is he even capable of teaching KP the things he needs to learn? After watching Pavlik's corner melt down like an ice cream sundae on a hot side walk, I do not believe KP can reach his full potential under Leow's tutelage. Cameron Dunkin has been trying to sack Leow from day one, but Kelly wouldn't hear of it. I hope he'll listen now.

Bear in mind -- Bernard also beat Tarver, Winky, Oscar, and Tito. He stopped Oscar and Tito, and scored a knock down against Tarver. Pavlik made the distance without ever being in serious trouble. The company Kelly keeps just ain't that bad! He took on the 2nd best LHW in the world, and lost while fighting 2 divisions above his normal weight.

The weight issue did make a difference; a lot more difference than I thought it would. Kelly needs to stay at 160 for a couple more years. When he does move up, he needs to do it the right way. That means you take your time, fight a few tune ups, and don't try to jump over the ranked guys and go right to the top.
