Pernell Whitaker appreciation thread.

This guy dominated GREAT fighters. Not just beat them, but beat them decisively (Chavez/Nelson)

He also put on some masterful performances against J L Ramirez 1+2,Mayweather,Haugen,Cordona,McGirt, Pineda,Brazier.

Anyone who calls this guy boring just does not know Boxing. He was a master in the pocket, and he actually was a lot more aggresive than peoplee give him credit for.

Just a terrific fighter. That is all.:bbb

The first few Whitaker fights i watched were...........Chavez ,DLH, and then Trinidad, and to be honest i was highly critical. I could not see what all the fuss was about. I thought sure he is good, but he is too negative for my taste. That is the mistake i made by judging him on fights where he was past his prime, and fights where he HAD to change his style in order to win those PARTICULAR fights.

Its like judging Hagler on his biggest fights with Hearns,Leonard and Mugabi to a lesser exent obviously. When its quite clear that Hagler was not an all out aggressive pressure guy, he just adopted that strategy to win those particualr fights.

I started to watch Whitaker fights when he was in his prime, and man the dude was awesome. He was far more aggresive than i could ever of imagined, and he had more punching power than i first thought. His Boxing displays are comparable to an artist painting beutiful pictures.

He was just a FANTASTIC fighter to watch imo.:good

One of the greatest of all time. The man was sick to watch. Top 15 ATG. Anyone who calls him a runner should give up being a fan of boxing.

I have his career set on dvd - I never get tired of watching him.
At his best he was untouchable and I'd certainly have him in my top 20 atg.

I agree with everything you and all the posters have said so far, but the part of Nelson. He was already done and had no business in there with Pea. Pea is an ATG and no he was never a runner. I wanted to see him fight Camacho and Rosario at 135. I also wanted to see him fight Meldrick at 140. We can't have it all I guess.
