My favorite Whitaker punch was his counter left straight/hook that he would do in his lightweight days when he was more nimble. A perfect example is in this clip vs Layne at around the 1:07 mark of this video. [yt]BU8hIzfKDFU[/yt]
My favorite Whitaker clip....is ANY Whitaker clip. Even his fight vs Trinidad, where he was an absolute shell of his former greatness...he still gave an ATG in his prime all he could handle. Im going to go watch some Whitaker fights...Ill be back later...:thumbsup
By far one the best P4P fighters of all time. I would match him up against any of todays champions at 135, 140, and 147 pounds!
Alot of people are jusy plain stupid. How could people forget how great Pernall was. I have about ten of fights on dvd that i taped off espn classics. Pernall "Sweet Pea" Whitaker would be a top fighter in any era of boxing period!
That fight right there actually shows Pea's greatness to it's full extent. Watch the first 7 rounds of that fight, Pea is leading 4 rounds to 3, with the score being even because of Tito scoring a KD(though they didn't count Whitaker's KD of Tito). Whitaker is actually roughing up and beating Tito on the inside, outfighting him. This is a guy who's best weightclass was two weights south, who's best years were about 10 years prior, and who's style was the slick boxing type, not the in-fighting, banging type. Yet, with all of his physical ability, quickness, and reflexes diminished, he relied on his experience and fighter's spirit to beat up the bigger fighter on his terms, while pressing the fight for the first half. Of course, at that stage, the old, shot, crack head version of Pea couldn't sustain any kind of brilliance for long, and he proceeded to get beaten on for most of the next 5 rounds, his toughness getting him through it.
