There are really no higher level middleweights to gain experience with. Take a look at Boxrec female middleweights- other than Shields and Marshall there's no-one most people have heard of. It seems most 'names' have fled Shields and moved up to super-middle. If Marshall doesn't call it a day she could move up and tempt the names and champions there with a nice payday. I suppose Hammer, Cruz-Dezurn, Green, Cederros would be a step up from her best previous opponents. But no-one in the whole of women's boxing can prepare you for Shields.

Yes there were odds on the fight if it happened in a calender year (as bookies often do) and Price was 2/7 at one point.

Savannah fought a dumb fight. Too much stupid switching stances and carried her left hand too low. She didn't use her legs to her advantage, didn't create distance and she didn't cut off the ring properly. The biggest mistake from what I saw was Savannah not using her longer reach with the jab to set up her combinations. I would never have her fighting the way Fury trained her. She would have both hands up in proper guard protecting her face. The jab woulda, shoulda and coulda been her best weapon followed by her hard right hand. She wasted herself in the fight trying to out speed Claressa and in essence fought like the smaller fighter. I would have maximized her size and that job would have been in Claressa's face all night long. Freddie Roach would have had her ready for this fight.

I can't believe the way she fought. Like a maniac. She went to war when usually she is very laid back in her style. It's impressive she has that in her locker I just don't know why she chose to do that. She smothered all her work and negated her best strength which is power from range.

Interesting post..and what is this gamer and dog that you talk about? If you had to quantify it as a human emotion or drive what would you call it? Is it heart? Just heart? Desire? Is there a difference between heart and desire? Is heart a sharper aspect of desire, if that is of course what you are referring to.
Was it "will" there is a difference between will and desire of course.
    Im interested in your breakdown.

Just different personalities. Look how Shields acted in the past and how she talks and behaves. She pushes herself before big fights. She's one of those fighters who gives a **** about all the circumstances. She's convinced she can and will beat anybody.

Of course experience matters too. Shields already fought some big fights in the past and also competed in MMA on a bigger stage while everyone was talking about her. She was acting like she's some world class MMA fighter. She just has natural confidence even when she's not good at something (MMA).

I don't think Marshall is a bad fighter or she doesn't love to fight or compete but the mixture was just too much. Lack of experience, bad game plan, facing a total dog and gamer who comes to fight and gives a god damn **** about everything.

I think Marshall went in truly believing she could beat Shields. And going by Shields previous performances and Marshall's apparent power I gave her a good shot. The problem was 1. that Shields showed a level beyond anything Marshall (or I) had seen in her before- scary sustained intensity (Natasha Jonas said she'd never seen anything like it) and much sharper, more stamina than in previous fights. Johnny Nelson said she fights to the level of her opponent- and she raised her game for Marshall. And 2. Marshall couldn't hurt her like she'd been able to hurt previous opponents. Despite the speed difference and being under the cosh in the early rounds she might still have won if her punches had had the effect they had on previous opponents. But they didn't.

Hindsight. Peter is a good trainer. Marshall simply got beat by the better fighter, why is that so hard for people to accept? Its not always a trainers fault if their fighter losses. Marshall fought well vs an elite competitor.

Anyone know anything more about this ? Peter Fury has done a great job for Savannah Marshall so it seems a bit over the board.
