these latest links are from a biography series which was done by WF Corbett in the Referee newspaper. Some interesting stuff.

 

Chapter 5 - This chapter has some amateur/impromptu stories of fights from the early days, as well as a brief mention of the second Dooley fight which ended in a close draw it seems. Both fighters fought in bare feet and this was a hastily arranged bout it seems. As said earlier, perhaps a Spar might be a better description.

chapter 6 this talks of Peter Jacksons time in the travelling boxing troupe, including his first match against Paddy Slavin, which seems to have resulted in a win to Peter JAckson.

Chapter 7 talks of a rowing incident and also tells the story of his fight with Bill Farnan

chapter 8 - Discussion includes training for the tom lees fight.

Chapter 9 - The Actual Lees fight which seemed a dominant win by Jackson.

chapter 11 is a really good one. It tells of Jacksons impromptu fight with William miller which is mentioned on CBZ as a 4 round exhibition.

 

chapter 12 tells of his ko win over Mick o brien among other things.

chapter 13 has some discussion on Jackson and Slavin and also Burke who bypassed both to fight Larry Foley who was past it. It is interesting that the Australian title Lees one appears to be so well regarded and most in Australia seem to think that our fighters were better than Americans (based on results)

 

chapter 16 - Telling about how mick Dooley got such a huskey voice from a bout with Peter.

chapter 17 is about Peters pupils and also his hate of snakes.

 

Chapter 18 talks a little about Jackson during the period he was a promoter, just before he sailed to the USA

Chapter 19 is very interesting it talks in detail about Peters methods of teaching and fighting. He was a big believer in hard straight punches, and didnt like to use the hook. There is also talk about his stance.

Chapter 20 is more on Peters training methods and talks about use of the bag as opposed to the ball, among other things.

It is great. It is a shame i have missed a lot a couple of chapters on the way through(pressed the wrong button for some). I have been looking for something like this on Peter Jackson. I hope a few others will enjoy this biography.

 

chapter xxii is more about the style of fighting peter employed. All very very interesting. Paricularly interesting that they were talking about the lost art of feignting as early as 1918!
