Another enjoyable article Daniel! I love the newspaper write ups from the 1800's. Can I ask where you source those from?

“I want to say in conclusion that boxing contests now governed by club rules are not brutal. A man perfectly trained and in the best possible health, with a physique as rugged as a rock, seldom, if ever, nowadays suffers long lasting injuries from the result of a bruising battle in the ring.”

Wow. Shows how far the sport came and has now seemingly dropped again. Just last week (or the week before?) 23 year old Oscar Gonzalez died from head injuries sustained in a bout. Has boxing lost the art of defence to the point where fighters simply don't know how to avoid or at least reduce the force of blows like Jackson talked about?

I have heard of The Arc of Boxing before but am yet to buy it. If you do end up getting it let me know if it is worth the buy.

Keep up the writing mate it's really good stuff.

Thanks Daz! I source most of the old newspaper articles, if Aussie, from http://trove.nla.gov.au/ but be careful, its addictive haha. I also use google newspapers for American and Canadian newspapers.

Im attempting to write a biography on Jack Carroll at the moment. Ive done about 15 odd pages so far, a long way to go yet but will post some excerpts on here soon.

This one describes Peter Jackson's first meeting with Mick Dooley, who was more advanced in his career than Jackson. It appears to have been a loss or a close spar, but also probably no more than a spar. Still though, it is interesting that Dooley may arguably have scored a victory over Bob Fitzsimmons and Peter Jackson. Underated?
