I recently received my passbook and my trainer is taking my training more seriously. Initially, I was taught to pivot when I throw my shots. Now he tells me that I should keep my feet still when I throw my shots and use more of my torso and shoulder. I was confused and asked him why I shouldn't pivot anymore. He answer by question by telling me that the pivot was just fundamentals; to get the motion of the hips into the shots.

I just want to make sure if this is correct. This forum has a lot of well informed and experience fighters.

Continue to pivot- ur trainer sounds ******ed. Fundamentals are fundamentals. If pivoting is good for Felix Trinidad and Miguel Cotto- its good for you. The difference in power is unreal.

I'd say yes, adds alot of power. You also might not need so much of a swing on your punches to get power so they will be harder to see coming.

Id say its pretty important that your rear foot lifts just a little with the right hand.

Listen to your trainer. I say that because he SEES you boxing, these other guys don't. Not to be rude or disrespectful to anyone. But you should always take your coaches advice.

The thing is that I realize I always pivot with each shot during a combination and I could easily be off balance. But keeping my feet still helps me reposition myself quicker and improve my balance.

The way I understand it is most of the power comes from twisting your hips and using your entire body to throw the punch. You can't twist your hips with your rear foot planted. So yes, your coach sounds ******ed.

Pivoting is where the power starts then goes through your hips to the shoulders and snapped out when the punch lands. Missing out the first part does not sound a good idea and I would not even think about it. Or does he mean pivoting when moving around the ring instead?

I'd still pivot, the rotation of the foot, hip and shoulder is necessary to put the maximum amount of weight into a punch. The weight is shifted onto the non-Pivoting foot when you throw a punch to help you maintain balance by the way! =] Plus, its good to get into the habit of finishing combinations with the lead hand, either a Jab or Left Hook, even if it doesn't land you'll be less off-balance and open to a counter then you would be if the right hand (presuming you're Orthodox) was the last punch thrown.

It may be a case that you overdo it a little, which is why he wnats you to keep your feet a little more still.
