It depends on the circumstances. Pacquiao vs. Morales III; Morales wasn't about to die, but there was no reason for him to continue fighting. Thus, a very acceptable quit. Leonard vs. Duran II; Duran was getting schooled, but he quit like a child. He said he was sick of chasing the "clown" around the ring all night.
Abslutely not. The worst thing any athlete can do is get into a "it's OK to quit mentality. That's the end of you. Once you quit, no matter what the reason, it becomes too easy to quit again, when the going gets tough. If you've never boxed, or done other hard aerobic sports like cycling, swimming, etc, you cannot believe how hard it is to finish with everything you've got. If you can't keep going while your lungs & arms are screaming at you, you have no business being in the ring. That said, a fighter's CORNER should always be ready to throw in the towel, to protect their fighter. No shame in that.
it really depends. when u have absolutely no chance and taking unnecessary punishment against the better opponent theres nothing wrong with quitting but really it should be your corner or the ref to take responsibilty. but when it comes to a fight like ortiz vs maidana ortiz got dropped but he also dropped maidana a couple of times too. i honestly think ortiz is a better fighter than maidana and could have won but he didnt have the heart of marquez. it definately could have been fighter the year if ortiz didnt ***** out
Don't risk your health if you can come back to fight again. Being behind isn't good enough reason to quit because it's competition and you're achievements will be defined more by your effort than anything else, but if you're needlessly taking punishment and have 0 answer, it's the smarter decision. No shame. Every man knows his limits.
Yes, just so long as it's from actually being beaten not from just being outpointed and made to look stupid.
I notice if someone quits in the corner on his stool its more accepted than when he does it during round. The smartest thing to do is quit by corner stoppage than you shoulder less of the blame, like suicide by cop instead of jumping in front of a train.
Did you in any way find Leonard good to watch that night? Yes, technically, boxing is hit and not get hit, but I found Leonard's performance tedious, irritating and a bit ridiculous. He fought like this :gayfight all night. Not entertaining in the least, if boxing went down that route people would have stopped watching years ago.
