I would rate it a 7. "Very good" but not "great" power. He tends to break guys down. Usually he only scores clean KOs against drained or weak chinned guys like Khan, Kirkland Kovalev, etc. Most of his other world class wins inside the distance were stoppages due to an accumulation of blows, smashing them up, etc. This would be opponents such as Saunders, Plant, etc who were battered until they either submitted or couldn't continue. I would say Canelo has unique thudding/clubbing shots that have some nice snap and speed behind them. He isn't the typical clubbing puncher who throws big heavy arm punches, I think he's just naturally heavy handed and as the commentators pointed out in the Charlo fight, Canelo almost always throws with full force. Basically, Canelo's power is similar to Rocky Marciano. He will hit you on the shoulders, arms, chest, whatever's available and it's going to leave a bruise and damage the bones. But he has more speed, timing, and accuracy to deliver the power than Rocky who swung for the fences. Canelo's punches are like nunchuck swings, just one hit probably won't KO but it will hurt like hell because the weapon is dense and swung as fast as a baseball bat.
4 fights in a row that have gone the distance. If he was a killer puncher at 168lbs it would have shown itself by now.
The guy's not a huge puncher. Most of his fights post-GGG 2 have been fixed/sparring sessions. Canelo looping punches in from his ankles whilst expelling as much air as he can whilst his opponent does nothing has given the illusion he hits hard. At 154-160 (where his real fights were) he barely knocked anyone out bar 140lber paper chin Khan and Kirkland.
6 he doesn't seem to have the same snap in his punches as he did a few years ago. his bread and butter was/is slow methodical break down of his opponents. he's no inoue.
Tyson lifted people off the floor on more than one occasion with uppercuts. Speed is part of the power equation.
Deontay is a 10. Inoue and Beterbiev are 8-9 they just have perfect technique and timing. Canelo is like a 7-8 for me, meaning his loaded up punches are on par with Inoue and Beterbiev but they’re far less accurate and he has to load up more. The one time he landed really clean, on Mell, Mell took a knee.
Didn't Nick Blackwell stop Ryder? Blackwell had average power I'd say, although it was at MW and Ryder has been far more durable since moving up. Canelo's technique and timing gives him some spectacular high light reel KO's as opposed to Thomas Hearn or Julian Jacksonesque genetics. I'd say a very solid 7 matched with a very stout beard hence where he is.
7 or 8 seem to be about right. I chose 8. He loads up on every shot these days and rattles guys pretty easily He would definitely get more KO's if fighters tried to fight back mind you. He is up their in the power stakes but not a murderous puncher
