Mayweather does not have a better chin than Gatti, Gatti gets dropped and stopped, but after a barrage and it's because he has a very non-existant defence and takes everything.

But is Gatti iron chinned? No, he does however have a "great chin", a very notable one, the guy can take a shot without a doubt.

Mayweather has a better chin that Cotto, only a few times has he been buzzed, and he does get hit, as with every boxer. Cotto has great recovery powers, but his chin overall is average in my opinion.

    Cotto is also much tougher.

mayweather has an alright chin to my knowledge but when have you seen him get hit cleanly over and over.

cotto i feel has a decent chin but his approach to the fight is jaw striaght out infront of him and he gets caught with it...exciting and smooth but his defence is waht gives him the 'weak chin' theory.

and gatti could take heck of a punch...even if you get dropped doesnt mean you have a weak chin. a good example would be eubank/s(for all the disputers) he was dropped around 6 times but he was rarely phased or hurt.
benn-dropped got tagged right on the temple dropped got up and started having an arguement with the ref...about being a slip.
watson- fell down through exhaustion just loads of pressure and heat made him drop to his knees...this isnt his chin
calzaghe- got smacked right on the jaw line and went girder legged. got up in 3 secs.

chin is hard to understand becuase it's not a skill or a trait it's just somthing that happens

Yes, that punch that landed on Calzaghe was a peach of a punch, twisted his whole body around, a fighter with a bad chin would have been KOed flat.

bump come lets see discussion here

i think chin comes down to skull thickness defend and probably just how the head is held
some boxers like beau jack or armstrong just good at keeping their chin tucked
    also
toney and hopkins in modern day

when rateing someones chin you need to look at the history has the fighter taken big shots ? and how has he coped with them with mayweather he has a very good defense so we don't get see to see how good his chin is and the times he gets hit he gets wobbled bad so that's a good indicator he is packing glass

wow, guys have no idea what a good chin is. its NOT being able to take clean shots and stay standing. a great chin is all about what you can do after being hurt and how you recover. recover abilities is WAY more important than being able to stand up.

thats why floyd has a GREAT chin. whenever he has been buzzed he knows exactly whats going on and immediately recovers completely and dominates.

gatti does NOT have a great chin, the dude is a WARRIOR but he gets hurt far more easily than say a floyd and he does NOT fully recover. he fights off intincts.

another myth is tysons iron chin. that dude NEVER once fully recovered after being hurt. once he is hurt he weakens drastically and is there for the taking

Gatti's chin was weird, it was like he needed to be dropped or stunned early on, then it would wake up and he would start eating the bombs better.

Chins are sometimes tough to gauge when you take into account defense, how well one rolls with the shot or sees it coming, the quality of the fighters, etc..

Sometimes a fighter may just be tired/weakened at a certain stage in the fight.

Holyfield faced some of the hardest punchers ever, and John Ruiz of all people hurt him the worst with one punch.
