From fight news.com Sad to report the passing of famed trainer Richie Giachetti at age 75 in Lodi, Ohio. Giachetti trained 14 world champions including Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson and Buster Douglas. He also managed HolmesÂ’ Hall of Fame career.
Very under rated trainer. What a job he did with Larry Holmes. Really a firm believer in boxers with a jab. He was another guy who I always liked his take on fights and he sure did have a good batting average.
Giachetti was a very good trainer, no nonsense fiery guy. Some guys needed that. He worked with guys like Holmes, Buster Douglas and of course Tyson.
I remember Richie walked out on Tubbs ahead of the Tyson fight because he said Tony was in no shape to fight. Tony had wasted time not training and there was no time left to do himself justice. Richie did not want to put his name to that fight so he walked. You have to respect that when you see so many trainers pick up a fee for guys who they know for a fact that they have no intention of trying to win.
I think he'd make a sound pick for the hall of fame. Giachetti worked with other fighters like Pryor, Page and Shavers.
He worked with Jerry Quarry when Jerry made a comeback against Lorenzo Zanon. Quarry was already a shot figher by then. Giachetti said he was always sorry he did not get a chance to train Jerry in his prime. He said Jerry had literally no idea of how to use his jab when moving in. Quarry quit (again) after that poor win against Zanon. Unfortunatley, he did not stay retired.
