Hatton's greatest achievement was drawing such jealously & bitterness from the ****wit minion haters.

His greatest achievement was winning the 2nd round of his last fight "by a country mile" until...

I think he called it that because it countered Hatton's own (wild lunging) left hook.

If you're joking, I apologise, but a check hook is used to offset a fighter who lunges when they punch. It's pretty rare at the elite level because, well, lunging in against a faster, more skilled opponent with a left hook is pretty dumb.

Basically, your opponent lunges, often with a lead left hook or a looping right hand. You throw your left hook with your weight on your right foot and use the momentum to move out of the way. They take the shot, their momentum carries them out of range and you can reset knowing you look awesome.

    Examples: Mayweather-Hatton, De La Hoya-Mayorga (I think... it's been a while).

It also requires a large amount of poise - you need to be supremely confident in your abilities, and your opponent's limitations.

    Something similar to this...

    Donaire's punch - a thing of beauty!

When Ricky Hatton was facing Floyd Mayweather it was as if, England had reached the World Cup final.

Ricky Hatton was the people's champion, all the people casually snorting coke on the weekends in society liverpool. All the old men down the local boozer, and all the scallys and chav's all loved Ricky Hatton.

He had a strange strange following in liverpool, it was as if he was a scouser.

The Height of his career, was when he got on the Mic at the weigh in for Mayweather vs Hatton and said...

    "Lets ****ing have him"

That right there was the height of Ricky Hatton's career, after that point. It was etheir up, or down. It was like when Johnny Wilkinson kicked that rugby ball over the posts to win England the Rugby world cup.

Moments after he did that, he had a sad look on his face.

"Because he knew he had reached the height of his life and sporting career, and he knew it was over..............over"

why would i be joking,i don't know what one is,never heard of one in the 70's 80's 90's or 00's,just seem to come along AFTER hatton/mayweather.

now, what you just explained above is a, err, left hook, just slipping under someones left hook, then going off balance and you getting twated by there left hook:thumbsup

obviously, some people throw basic shots better than others

It is a left hook, but with a slightly different intent. Just trying to counter with the left or trying to move under the punch would still leave you in range. The check hook allows you to punch and offset the other fighter's aggression while moving out of range.

Very few fighters can do it though, from what I've seen. And very few fighters give a gift like Hatton did to Mayweather.

Similar, but Donaire backed up rather than move to the side. But yeah - the check part is on account of checking the opponent's aggression.

I don't buy in the 'check hook' being an actual punch either. Just a counter left. I also think it's a very post-Floyd-Hatton thing myself, can't remember hearing it beforehand, I admit I might be wrong though.

He's definitely popularised it - I'll see if I can find Steward talking about the different ways a left hook can be used. It was a good article where he talked about using footwork to get the most out of a shot.
