Swarmer did bring up Nicotino:smoke in post #5. Locche, like Canto, wasn't tall for his weight, nor was he gifted with a great punch. However, both were incredibly quick, not at all deficient with respect to reflexes and reaction times. Vilomar Fernandez also possessed ring intelligence, but again, augmented with excellent quickness and a granite chin at his best.

Arguello has also been mentioned, but his height and reach at his peak weight were an overwhelming advantage. Even at WW, he would have been taller and longer armed than many world class opponents.

    Ricardo "Chappo" Lopez.

He was the smartest fighter I have ever seen in the ring. He was a true professional. I was a joy to watch him infight in one fight, or counter in another. Always economic and efficient. He never wastes a movement or punch.

He was not destined to be great, but he is a perfect model for all consument professionals in the ring.

Locche is the classic example of this type of boxer. Short, balding, chain-smoking, poorly conditioned flat-footed target who is still virtually unhittable:

BS. He had nothing going for him but his stamina and ring intelligence. For that he did very well. And no, not every fight he was in his opponent was robbed. In fact there was only one clear robbery and about 4 debatable fights.

Nicolino Locche had a specialized set of unique athletic gifts to supplement and make possible his ring intelligence.

You must have seen him on Friday night fights. That is were I saw him.

He fought Johnny Tapia as well. I think he was on his way to a decision before the cut ended the fight in a draw. He also gave a good account of himself versus Rafael Marquez.

Tapia's face looked bad and one could tell the Marquez had a healthy respect for Ricardo.

I would love to get my hands on a few of his dvd's.

Locche's unique, split second radar, similar to Benitez's, HAD to be dependent on a certain, like I said, highly specialized athletic prowess. Those incoming punches that he evaded so magically throughout his career were not from the more relatively mundane methods of blocking, parrying, etc., which don't require the almost esp-like powers that he displayed on defense.

    Ring intelligence ?
Jack Britton, though a light puncher fought over 344 fights in a TWENTY FIVE year career
and was stopped just ONCE in his FIRST year...
What better example of RING intelligence ?
