I heard about this. Sad news.

I saw Dwight Muhammad Qawi live vs. Evander Holyfield in their first fight. He lost, but the Camden Buzzsaw never wilted or took his foot off the gas in a classic 15-rounder of non-stop punching. I will never forget that fight, nor DMQ’s performance.

Dwight learned to box in prison at Rahway NJ, which had a boxing vocational program, and turned pro at the advanced age of 25. After a 1-1-1 start (with the loss later avenged twice), he won a world light heavyweight title with a stoppage of Matthew Saad Muhammad, and stopped MSM in a rematch.

He moved up to cruiser to win his second title (after dropping the light heavyweight belt to Michael Spinks in a unification and had a memorable fight with Old George Foreman.

Born Dwight Braxton, he converted to Islam and changed his name to Dwight Muhammad Qawi.

In the late 1990s, after retiring, he went to work in a drug and alcohol rehab clinic.

He passed away in a nursing home in his hometown of Baltimore. He suffered from dementia in the final five years.

    Ten bells and RIP, champ.
