From Boston Herald Former Boston Herald columnist and author George Kimball died last night, his wife, Marge Marash, said today. He was 67 years old. Kimball was a sports columnist and boxing writer for the Herald from 1980-2005. He also authored and edited several books about boxing, including Four Kings. Kimball was diagnosed with cancer in 2005 A true writing great. Four Kings will grow old with me.
I remember pre-ordering that book and counting down the days. I was like a kid at Christmas when it arrived. Sure I took a day off work to read it. I was taught about that particular era and George Kimball did a tremendous job of recapturing those days.
Haven't read that book in what seems like ages... Will get it out of the bookcase this weekend methinks. RIP
This comes after a five year fight against cancer, I am told, after doctors had given him six months. He was a fine writer and an excellent journalist. Another one out of the Mullan generation with an old school empathy with fighting men. He will be revered for his wonderful book recapturing one of the great boxing eras. One suspects he would have been fine company across a few drinks, talking into the night. That is a great epitath.
RIP - For a 27-year-old who missed out on that golden age, Four Kings reads as if you're right there with it. Amazing book.
He wrote regularly in the Irish Times newspaper. He was good buddys with Pete Hamill, those guys had great times drinking in The Lionshead bar in New York. RIP
