I just saw that Jimmy Bivins died today. He was a great fighter and one of the last great fighters from that era that made it to 2012. The abuse he suffered as an elder was sickening, but thankfully he was discovered and was able to live his remaining years more comfortably. RIP. This content is protected
I was amazed to find out only lately that he was still alive, amazed to hear that one of the greats from the golden era was still around.
A sad loss to the sport. What happened to him in later life was tragic. It is nice to think he did recover and hopefully had another decade or so of decent life.
Heard about it earlier. Fought everybody and beat most of them. I still believe that his 1942-1946 run was one of the best ever, definitely out of the ones that didn't end in a title shot. He went unbeaten for 26 fights against some of the best fighters around. Bivins barely ever fought a poor opponent. Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore, Charley Burley, Lloyd Marshall, Joey Maxim, Melio Bettina, Gus Lesnevich, Teddy Yarosz, Lee Q. Murray, Anton Christoforidis, Billy Soose, Bob Pastor, Tami Mauriello, Oakland Billy Smith, Lee Savold, Clarence Henry, Turkey Thompson, Mike DeJohn. A list of names that he beat, which would make most men shudder at the thought of surviving a single fight against any of them. It's quite astonishing how he survived 14 more years after being left to die by his family in 1998. Made him a very awkward and difficult opponent to compete against. In his day he was known as the "Cleveland Spider Man".

The family members responsible for taking care of him left him in the attic and did not feed or bath him properly. He was terribly malnourished and obviously very sickly. It's terrible that his own family would do that to him, but luckily in the late 1990s or early 2000s he was discovered and received proper care.

Great fighter, was a legend of the sport, Rip. Sad to hear his own family would do that to him. A shame he never got a title shot.
I am not sure. If I had to guess, I'd say he was a bit like Eddie Perkins was. Aware of his surroundings but with definite troubles. Able to function, but with help.
