He's done at the elite level. He beats no one of note at 168 or 175.

I'm guessing you're not a Mayweather Sr fan.

You can't deny his greatness as a trainer. Without him, Floyd JR might not have been nearly this good.

He also did some great work with ODLH, Hatton (Slightly), among many other boxers.

Floyd Jr. would've been fine with Uncle Mamba the entire way, even if Sinclair had gone to prison years earlier and never taught him a thing.

He did nothing for De La Hoya, actually. Oscar was an idiot to ever leave Alcazar. There was no reason to and he never found anyone better for him.

Oscar went 5-2 with Sr., from Castillejo through Mayorga. He looked awful in that stretch. He struggled with Castillejo more than anyone expected him to and every contemporary boxing writer blamed it on his crappy new style that Sr. forced on him and you could tell from their in-ring banter they had no chemistry or mutual respect working together even then. His clunky and ill-suited tutelage with Sr. was most prominent in his terrible middleweight run. Most thought he got a gift over Sturm. He was KTFO by a Hopkins body shot. His only legitimate victories in that five year stretch after Castillejo were over three guys Tito had ruined.

Sr. was great for Hatton?? You're joking?

Wow, still people critical of Roach.

Of course Roach will do great things with Bute. He'll develop his right hook and teach him ways to get different angles, especially against orthadox fighters.

Roach is very good, but he isn't a miracle worker and won't mesh with every individual fighter and the lifetime of stylistic baggage they bring with them.

The same is true of any coach. There is nobody out there who can improve anybody that walks into their gym.

    Exactly.

Just as he helped Cotto against Southpaws, he'll help Bute against orthadox fighters.

Even Hopkins gives Roach a lot of respect, who remember, trained Hopkins at one point in his career.

So, that's first hand knowledge and experience.

Perhaps, you're right that Bute will not mentally recover, especially considering how impotent he looked vs Pascal, but we know he's capable of much more.

The fact that he's getting Roach to train him speaks well about his desire to do better.

At the end of the day, we'll just have to see, but one thing is certain, Bute can punch.

Ouch ! Now that's a reach. I think he's had years where his fighters had good runs, but the best trainer? WOW !!! errrrrr I dunno... he's a great one though...
