They also cheered when Leonard missed. Remember when he 'landed' that bolo punch, followed by a left-right? The crowd went wild over that, but the slow motion replay showed the uppercut was blocked, the next shot only grazed Duran and the third missed altogether.
Because when Ali called him a "gorilla", and "ignorant", Frazier thought it was something racial (which doesn't really make any sense since both Ali and Frazier are the same color) and he took it the wrong way.
But it's not the same thing. Ali was joking in good fun. Duran did it in a vicious condescending sort of way. Ali was funny. Duran was just plain disgusting.
