Roy in the 80's

Let's say he became a pro in the in 1980, How well do you think his career would have turned out in that era?

Judging Jones during his peak, which I think was around 95-02, I see nobody in the 80's at 160 and below who'd start favourite against him, including Hagler.

Granite tough pros like Thornton and Malinga were just blasted by Jones, and the elite, fellow-greats like Toney were cruised past over 12 comfortable rounds. James Toney was better than anybody on Hagler's record at the time he fought them.

 

I favor Hagler over him for sure. As for the rest he's the best middleweight out of all of them.

 

Reckon roy would have done well in any era. To this day one of the best i ve ever seen in the ring. Beat decent names with ease at times. Ended up making a bit of a mess of his career. But at his peak theres not many i d back to beat him.

 

Roy Jones era was better in competition imo, 154-168 in the late 80's early 90's was just awesome.

There are only a handful of fighters who are capable of beating roy in his prime

 

I'd also go as far as to say that nobody beats him from 160-168

 

Between 80 - 83 Hagler stops him without a shadow of a doubt. Jones throws the kitchen sink at Marvin, and he just keeps coming and landing his own very hurtful shots, until he finds that chin and keeps hitting it, then closes the show around about the 9th.

 

I think he'd do fine. I don't think the early 80s middles would be able to beat him, Hagler included. He'd eventually move to 175 but Spinks would be gone already so that would basically leave Marvin Johnson and possibly Moorer as adversaries. I wouldn't bet on any of them having anything other than a puncher's chance. I don't think the 80s would be a step up in class unless he somehow landed at 175 very early on.

 

Michael Spinks is the only fighter within reasonable perameters whom I'd comfortably favor over Jones. And given the proposed time frame, the fight might not even be doable, as it would take years before Roy would ascend to 175, by which point Spinks will have moved on. I can't envision Virgil Hill, Prince Charles, Dennis Andries, Marvin Johnson, Bobby Cyz or a blown up Hearns beating a prime Roy. Hagler vs Jones at middle might have been a good fight, but I'd still favor Jones.

 

But RJ only fought two of them, was great era though

I think Spinks would beat him.

He possibly fights Chong Pal Park for the 168 pound title. He would win that.

 

Hagler would beat jones, dropping him on the way.

Roy would win a rematch as haggler aged.

As for the other divisions, I am not sure he'd fight for SMW in the 80s, if it was llargely an ignored division in the 90s then it was even less wanted in the 80s. Spinks woud be his Dariuz, he'd not be keen to face him. Hes certainly not getting in the ring with a HW like Holmes or Tyson.
