Hey i am 18 year old and live in Edinburhg scotland

So i am a national champion in my event over 800m and mile...iv ran 1:51 and 4:09 mile however i have become very dissiluiniised with my sport for reasons including the coaching and after going to the world youths last year i saw the dark side and would say 95% of the sport is on performance enhacing drugs...having been offered drugs myself more than i care to say i have decided i wanna take up boxing which has always interested me since a very young age...any advice on starting up e.g clubs to go to? who to talk to talk with? Training? Kit? etc..?

    Thanks in advance

find your local club and get training. boxing kit is very simple. wraps and gloves to start with and then you can accessorise with boots, shorts, gumshield, headguard, skipping rope etc

  7. Anyone can walk into a club. It takes a good intelligent hard working impression for a coach to put time into you. With above mentioned story, I'm sure a coach won't mind putting you on the pads quick smart.

I agree with Joker and Gpater, find yourself a gym and crack on. in the meantime you could get yourself a boxing basics book and start trying out some of the shadowboxing routines, circuit training etc

What other training do you do by the way? is it just running or what?

You know this makes me feel alot better about getting my arse handed to me in a 800m from a bunch of 17-19 year olds a few months ago. Knew the *******s were all on juice:twisted:.

Yeah alot of running about 70 miles a week, However 800m being a sprint event i do alot of fast 200' workout and weights 3xa week so im by no means a skinny little runner!

A normal week would like this:

    Monday - am 3 Miles pm 2 miles w/u stretching strides 8x200m 25 ave 2 miles down
Tuesday am 3 miles pm 12 miles Followed by an hour of lifting weights
Wednesday am 3 miles pm 2 up 10x400m at 59/60 ave 2 down
Thursday am 3 miles pm 10 miles at 5:30 pace or faster
friday am 3 miles pm 8 miles at 6:00 pace followed by hard weights
Saturday am Hill repeats which take an hour pm 8 miles easy pace 6:30
Sunday 15 miles followed by hard weights

All runs are followed by 10x50m flat out to increase speed.

  11. Have to respect that. You'll like boxing training I think.

have to say boxing training 10x harder than training for top class running also.
