It is very cold right now and lots of snow. What is a good alternative to road work in the mourning ie treadmill, eliptical, its to cold and icy and snowy to run outside.

    1st. Jump Rope
    2nd. Treadmill

I hear varying opinions about ellipticals but for me personally, I don't feel I get a good enough exercise from doing it. It may build your wind up but your legs need the endurance as well.

I agree with JagOfTroy. When the weather is bad, just jump rope.

I agree with running on the treadmill but how does jumping rope compare to running?

I was told by a cyropractor not to run on treadmills becuase it drops your arch in your foot thats why I asked. I guess I could jump rope. thanks for the replies guys.

Have you ever jumped rope? I don't mean like little kids do for fun, I mean like boxers do for conditioning. I guarantee you that you can run at a joggers pace a hell of a lot longer than you can jump rope with almost any intensity.

Jumping rope is done on the balls of the feet so there is less impact than a proper jogging gait of heel first then rolling off the toes in a stride. A good pace for me when I was jumping rope was about 160-180 rpm as it kept a good rhythm going and felt more fluid than a slower pace. When jogging, I would not hit those numbers. Probably only hit in the neighborhood of 120-140 paces a minute. At my peak, more years ago than I care to think about, I could maintain a 6 minute per mile pace for 10 miles while jogging/running. The longest I could maintain the above pace for jumping rope was 15 minutes and I would be more worn out than after running 10 miles.

    P****!

    Just kidding.

*Waiting for the 'GRUMPY OLD MAN' character from SNL to post something about walking 10 miles to school with gout or playing rugby with a bullet fragment lodged in his head *
