Sanchez just sat there all by himself for a good 20-30 seconds. I've never seen anything like that in my life.
"Good Featherweight"?? He had over 15 Title defenses of the SuperBantamweight Crown, At one point was 36-0 with 36 Kayo's. He in universally regarded as the best 122 Lb. Champion ever! I also seem to remember there were legendary tales of Gomez having great difficulty making 122. & was rumored to move up to Featherweight long before he actually did. So a move to 118 would be almost impossible.
Gomez said before the fight that "I will send Sanchez's wetB*ck ass back to Mexico City in a coffin". He had GREAT disdain for Mexican fighters since he'd beaten all of them he faced up to that point, and felt that Sanchez would be just another easy victim... boy was he wrong, and as a Mexican, I couldn't be happier that Sanchez turned his face into hamburger in the first round and proceeded to batter Gomez like a red-headed step-child the rest of the fight.
But Gomez showed that championship heart and hung around a lot longer than many thought he would. When he went down and swelled up early, I sure didn't think he'd last much longer. But he did. And he tried and gave 100% of himself in there and kept throwing punches and trying for the win. How many guys really do that when all of a sudden they are the guy badly hurt? Most times that kind of fight is over early and it doesn't go another 7 rounds.
It was a good competitive fight, but in the eighth round, Sanchez put his stamp on the whole fight by stopping Gomez.If Gomez had stayed at 118, him and Jeff Chandler was a great fight in the making!
The Davila fight is an exceptional performance. His footwork and movement in and out.............it's like he's deliberately not pulling the trigger. Truly sublime, and when he finally does. Gomez at 122 might just be the best finisher I've ever seen.
As far as I'm aware Gomez never fought at 118. His mark was made as the arguably the greatest 122lber of all-time :good
This is the main reason I hated Gomez.Total classless *******.I still hate him and I'm not even Mexican.I have much love for so many Boricua fighters-Cotto is my present favorite-but Gomez got what he deserved.When Sal knocked his ass out,I was watching with a Salvadorean buddy in the old Felt Forum on closed circuit tv.You could hear a pin drop as the vast majority was Puerto Ricans.Sal is one of my top 5 favorite fighters ever.He was the best featherweight I have ever seen in my lifetime.RIP,Chava.
Pea, I've always considered Gomez..the Gomez of the mid 70's to the Sanchez bout to be a phenom...like a mutant invader from another world...he was a colder, more complete, less emotion driven fighter than Duran, but not as much as say, Monzon..I'm trying for some perspective here, I guess..and the thing about him that was so scary was the almost sadistic way he savored his work...the ko of Zarate, when I first saw it, shocked me at how easily he demolished the invincible..then, that is..Zarate.
