JUst watched it again just re fresh my memory, it was pretty one sided to me I had it 3-1 going to be 4-1 until the finish, Selby looked to be controlling and dictating everything in there from what I was watching.
The Selby fight was competative. 3-1 either way or 2-2 is fair. Then Simpson got caught with the shot. Judges don't score Simpson well because they struggle to see the blend of defence/offence that Simpson uses. Yes, I am criticising our judges technical perceptivness and I don't care if they are ex-fighters, referees etc
2-2 wasnt unreasonable and John is a well known slow starter. I think the nature of the stoppage has given the impression that Selby was more in control than he actually was. When I said take him late, I didnt necessarily mean take him out late, just that Selby has only been past 6 once, and never past 8. The plan would have been to outlast him given Simmo's usually superb conditioning. That said, I am sometimes overly pessimistic watching Welsh fighters so if you tell me I am talking bollocks I might be inclined to believe you
I never felt like Selby was anything but in control while watching, personally. I don't think Simpson did anything really effective, he wasn't landing anything of note whereas you could see Selby was implementing what he wanted to do for the most part by keeping things long.
The fight was still give and take. It was heating up. Fights are chess matches and the majority of the time one move doesn't signal the end so abruptly but fighters need to act like each punch could be the curtain call.
Problem I saw for John disregarding the stoppage was he wasn't getting anything going to slow down Selby who held most of the physical + range advantages. He needed to work Selby's body early, rough him up, impose himself. But he couldn't, at best he was landing a few cuffing blows per round. There was no real heat on Selby, the Welshman looked comfortable. Simpson looked to have lost a step or two really.
I agree that his usual work to the body and rough house on the inside had not taken any notable toll yet but Selby hasn't experienced the championship rounds while having a tough time. Until the stoppage, it was still a points based fight for me, no real damage inflicted by either.
Lads lets not kid ourselves on here, no way was the fight a shutout for Selby, there was absolutely nothing in the fight really until the stoppage came and even when it did i was surprised. I was definitely expecting this one to go 12 rounds and see how Selby could have dealt with that but fair play to him caught John with a good punch to the ribs.
I can't like Selby because of his mustache. Good fight though. Selby would probably box throughout it.
The rounds were competitive but Simpson never affected Selby throughout the rounds he came forward but the damage was being done by Selby mentally with good work and controlling the fight. John struggled massively with Selby's range.
I didn't watch it live, but on replay it's clear that Selby is the man in control. It might be it for Simpson actually, yet another close decision loss in the Smith return might have accounted for him as a top line fighter.
IMO I think Choi would KTFO Selby late in the fight. No way he stops Choi. Under the word 'Granite' in the dictionary is written Choi's name.
