I"ve been reading Dempsey's book recently and he recommends doing shadow work with 12oz gloves on. In your experience does this make shadow practice more effective?

Its to get you used to the weight of the gloves for handspeed, endurance and proper timing when wearing them in a fight.

Good topic - shadow boxing with or without gloves is always important.

This is a good idea and topic. I never really considered it much, and usually don't shadow box with any gloves. But having regulation size fighting gloves for shadow boxing, in 10 oz i think would be smart to keep familiarized with that weight and feel. We sure do a lot of rounds on mitts and sparring in heavier gloves dont we.

I alternate, 1 round with gloves on, next off.

I prefer to hold small weights while I shadowbox, then remove them. Worst thing ever is when your hands come too close together...SMASHED my thumb between the weights once throwing some sort of stupid combination that's too complicated for me. Probably a 1-2.

lol, Ive done the same. On a side note make sure you dont buy dumbbells that are wide when shadowboxing.

Were the gloves that Dempsey did wear during fights not lighter then 12oz. So he means you should shadowbox with gloves heavier then fighting gloves?

If serious, you're asking for back, joint, tendon and ligament problems.

Never thought about it, but I've been shadow boxing with gloves on when in the gym, without when working out on my own.

I shouldn't say "shadowbox", per se...I throw about 300 punches a day in the air holding those weights...8 lbs isn't a lot of weight at all.

Yep. He mentions that these should be practice gloves.

i alternate it with and without gloves. I use 16oz, mainly because whenever i train with 12's, i feel real clumsy and slow when i wear 16's in sparring. But if i'm training with 16's, i feel like a gun when i pop some smaller gloves on. So i'd rather get use to the big ones.

    probably psychological but whatever.
