Duran is in several of my LW fantasy matchups. Duran vs Chavez, Duran vs Ike Williams, Duran vs Benny Leonard, Duran vs Carlos Ortiz, Duran vs Joe Gans etc etc etc.
Duran wouldn't kill him but he'd win every time. Shane was an outstanding fighter, but Duran was among the absolute best of the best.
Shane would give him trouble. Lots of it. He's by far the more physically talented human being in this fight, and Duran struggles with speed. Still, Duran was the better fighter. Shane sold out wholesale to his gifts- He threw leads, jumped into rights, and had a popgun jab of no real authority 90% of the time. He had fast feet and good movement, but too often he forgot his own defense in order to land more punches. A fighter as good as Duran would be able to connect on him as he tried his rush tactics. And then, when that big power and more consistent body attack slowed him down enough, Duran would begin to come on in the style he enjoyed most. Shane wins several rounds with his carpet bombing strategy, and makes it look suprisingly easy, but then, we see a subtle shift slowly become massive as Duran starts to outbox Mosley until the damage accumulates enough for him to get real aggressive. He then either rolls over Mosley till the final bell or stops him. Mosley has the talent to win, but never developed the skills, and perhaps more importantly, the habits to win. A very cautious, point oriented Mosley stands an excellent chance to outpoint Roberto. But Shane never fought that way. Consistency, tenacity, and craft win the day here.
A hard fought match that goes the distance. Both are excellent punchers. Shane has the fast hands, whereas Duran has the defensive prowess. Defense will be the tiebreaker, as the verdict is...Duran on points.
