In the old days fighters did drink raw eggs mixed with sherry.

Why did they do that? Was it to kill the salmonella with alcohol or was it to make the raw eggs more tasty?

Raw eggs are obviously a great source of protein. And it's been proven that alcohol reduces the risk of food poisoning or salmonella. I'm not sure if it gets rid of it altogether, but then again it's guys like Bob Fitzsimmons who did this, I think he's the type of guy he'd be prepared to take the risk of getting salmonella just for a high protein feed.
