What fighters were the best at consistently throwing effective short punches, and what made each of them so good at it?

Louis, Tyson and Dempsey are all gimmes.

    Eh?

Tunney dropped Dempsey with a pretty short punch if I'm remembering correctly.

Marciano was the master of the 6 inch shot, so was Louis but lets not forget Julian Jackson was had the 6inch snap shot

Though he was best known for a left-hook that started somewhere just over the canvas Frazier was actually really adept at throwing short but powerful uppercuts and hooks to the body.

But all in all I'd probably go for Louis in this one. Really like his short, compact and accurate punches. Tyson could also land short punches with devastating effect, but he had a tendency to swing a bit wildly at times as well.

People who go on about the 'six inch punch' really don't realise how short six inches is.

Bernard Hopkins is pretty underrated when it comes to short punches. "Chopped liver with Hopkins sauce" is pretty short, as far as left hooks to the body go.

See, if people said 'fourteen inch punch' then that'd be fine, but of course it doesn't sound impressive enough, even though people know it's exaggerated.

Bit like people saying they're a couple of inches taller than they really are.

    Bernard Hopkins
    Julio Cesar Chavez
    Salvador Sanchez

All were great at throwing short punches and getting their bodies into every shot.
