I just witness Travis Brown use the shoulder roll against congo with good effect.
As Chet congo rushed with a one two combo travis brown shoulder rolled and counted with a right upper cut..

who says Floyd's style would be totally useless in MMA..

anyway just thought Id share that ..

it would definitely work, it neutralizes the power of the punch.

i like mma but im a boxing fan first and foremost.

just wait til the hardcore mma fans come in here and tell you how what you just said is blasphemy and then try to break down what would happen against an "elite" mma fighter blah blah blah lol

it worked against Kongo....But Kongo is not a grappler though...he's a striker. (kickboxer...and nothing special in kickboxing) ...The shoulder roll would probably be useless against a guy who'd only try to take his opponent on the ground...

Damn good thread...I was just using the shoulder roll in some small glove sparring at the mma gym (they do it once a month....dangerious..) I come from a boxing background...I was able to roll and counter the hell out of the wrestlers...(Some of them did eventally get me and slam the **** out of me...others didn't). But I think the reason why the "shoulder roll won't work" idea has become so popular is most mma guys don't have the skill to do it.

I think to just stand in the pocket and try to do multiple rolls with no counter? Yes a wrestler will change levels to try and take you down. But to shoulder roll the first punch thrown (by either a striker or grappler) and then counter? In my view very effective against anyone.

The problem with shoulder rolling is that some judges will score that as a hit.

    STUPID ****ING JUDGES

ahhh judges are bad with the grappling..but most of those judges are boxing judges..and i suspect they would see most mma guys punches and if they land or not.....and really..i think the trick to the shoulder roll in mma is to make the man pain....come back and counter hard.

there is another example where a guy is on the cage, rolls a right hand and comes back with a big right hand that stuns his opponent. wish i could find a gif of it.

Helps to know that the guy has next to zero chance of attempting to take you down.

exact because the fighter was able to counter with an upper cut then score a take down after the upper cut.

well, i dont think you could do what floyd mayweather does..stand in the pocket and just shoulder roll punch after punch with no return...if you do that..the guy will grab you and slam you..my point is...on the first punch...be it from a striker...or a wrestler..you can shoulder roll back, then come back with a vicious counter fast and hard. i think that is effective against many kinds of opponants. You just have to be good enough to do it.
