This content is protected John Simpson looks visibly stunned as Stephen Smith takes the win on points SUPER-TRAINER Billy Nelson last night revealed John Simpson won't be turning his back on the sport after being robbed in Liverpool. The 27-year-old from Greenock was so outraged by the decision on Wednesday he couldn't even spit out any words after local hero Stephen Smith had controversially been handed the points decision. But Nelson revealed the former British and Commonwealth champ will be back in his Fighting Scots gym. He said: "John's fighting in July. He may go down to super-bantamweight but this is good news for all. "It would have been tragic had he walked away because he is a nice guy with so much ambition. But he can come again regardless of what happened. "It would be shocking to lose heart because of one fight which was a joke, to be honest. Terry O'Connor's scoring was incredible. "He has been robbed of the British and Commonwealth titles so why should he stay at featherweight? "There were three English judges and an English referee so that's just not fair at all but he has everything and age on his side to come again mark my words." Manager Alex Morrison was just as angry with the decision and sent a letter of disgust to the British Board of Control. The Glasgow businessman, and Simpson's manager, feels so upset with the decision especially about what was going through the mind of O'Connor to give the Scouser the fight by an incredible six points. Morrison said: "I wrote a complaint to the board about Terry O'Connor. "It was close, there was no doubt about that. If it was a draw or he lost by a point I wouldn't have said a word but for O'Connor to be giving it to Smith by six rounds, it is a joke." Morrison has been unhappy with O'Connor before and this time he couldn't hold back his anger. He said: "He scored against Brian Carr when he fought Patrick Mullings in 1999. After the fight Patrick came to him and offered him the Lonsdale belt and said, 'take it', because I didn't win that fight. "I had words of sympathy for him then and never made a complaint but I'm furious and I'm getting a letter off to the board right now." Simpson told Record Sport he was going to consider retiring but Morrison hopes he battles on. He said: "John couldn't even speak after the fight because he was that upset and who can blame him. Glad to hear it. He shouldn't let consistently bad scoring ruin his love for game because he's got something to offer. SBW if he bolis down well and feels strong i feel for many a fighter in that division.
Be interesting to see how he does at SBW if he does move down. I dont think smith will want to move to euro level just yet just wonder if they could get john a shot at it instead hopefully get his world title shot back on track. Good news he aint quitting though still has alot to offer
Good news. I didn't want to have to get down and beg him to fight on. Simpson has way too much to offer and if it is SBW there are some rather interesting fights down there for him.
I would like to see Simpson Kiko Martinez man .Them big overhand right's Kiko throw's would probably bounce off Simpson''s head man .I think the 2 styles would be a great fight man .
Yeah agree. maybe fight booth first see how he does at the weight then move on to kiko. a fight with munroe would also be interesting!
After the dissapointments Simpson has suffered over the years, no one could'nt blame him for calling it a day, but he still has more to offer, you can understand him feeling he won against Smith, but i had Smith a tidy winner by vitue of his work early on. Simpson is a tough honest hard working pro, that always give's you a hard night's work, but his style will always leave him open to lose tight decisions against more stylish, eye catching fighters
