Pastrano was a colorful and charismatic character, also appealing to the ladies. (My mother and grandmother enjoyed watching Willie.) Listening to the MSG crowd progressively cheer louder and louder as the fascinating Joey Archer's jabs streamed out to strike at a ducking and dodging Emile Griffith was a revelation. Corro had the charismatic appeal of neither. There seemed to be nothing interesting about the man. In retirement, Pastrano remained an engaging character, vibrant and entertaining as long as his health remained. Joey Archer has had something of an air of mystery about him since his early and abrupt retirement in frustration after Griffith II, which triggered much curious speculation. Fans wanted to know about him. With Corro, the attitude, even among many Argentine fans (as you touch on), was more one of "Good riddance!" (Hugo came along at the worst possible time for an Argentine MW, right in Monzon's tsunami wake. Even Galindez was overshadowed by King Carlos in Argentina.) Antuofermo had established a reputation as an exciting fighter, and crowd chants of "Vito! Vito! Vito!" were reminders of "Nino! Nino! Nino!" for Benvenuti. Therefore, when Antuofermo-Corro proved to be a dud despite the closeness of the scoring, Corro took all the blame. That was reinforced when Vito's four remaining title fights proved to be so entertaining and compelling. (Prompted by the undertaking of this post, I just decided to review the Mosquito's knockout of Cyclone. Good times.)
Teddy Yarosz's stopped the tough Pete Latzo, but it sounds like an early stoppage. Other than that he did not really prove to be able to bust an egg, let alone dent someone's jaw.
I thik it was Corro's performance against Vito that really ruined his reputation for good.Terrible fight and a sluggish, tepid performance, though antuofermo has to take some of the blame as well.
