In the Holmes vs Spinks fights which fighter had the best performance regardless of the judge’s decisions?

While Spinks won the first fight, I think Holmes had a more impressive performance in the second fight and definitely deserved to win it. So for me Holmes had the best perfomance.

My questions are, who had the best performance, and if there was a thrid match 6 months later, who wins?

My answers are, Holmes had the best performance, and if there was a third match, Holmes would likely win it.

Hmm, a light heavyweight makes history by beating a heavyweight champ that has been undefeated for 48 fights?

Or the former heavyweight champ regains his crown?

This is a 'no brainer' if you ask me.

I THOUGHT SPINKS WON THE FIRST FIGHT bIG To TAKE THE TITLE, the 2nd fight was a lot closer but Holmes did not do enough to take Spinks title, if the had a 3rd fight I would go with Spinks,Holmes could not find success with his style but Spinks would have to use his right and agles more like he did in the 1st fight to win clearly

A third fight? If they were in same shape as in rematch then i'd go for Larry, but he was getting on by that time.

My impression at the time was that Holmes got robbed in BOTH fights, and while the first decision was questionable, the second was ludicrous.Seems like the officals were judging a popularity contest instead of a heavyweight title fight. After Spinks-Holmes I, Larry had made some unflattering comments about Rocky Marciano and the ringside judges. It looked as though this influenced the judges to the point that Larry would have had to ktfo Spinks to get a draw in the rematch.Indeed, Mike was wobbly at the end, and it sure looked like Larry won.

The first decision wasn't questionable at all. I'd say around 90% of people thought Spinks won. Therefore, you have to question your judgement.

I often wonder whether an ATG heavyweight should have big trouble with Spinks in two fights anyway.

Tyson got him out of there in 91 seconds, and I dont even think Tyson was one of the greats.

I know Holmes was aging, and maybe Spinks just 'had the right style' but for someone as great as Holmes is alleged to be, he sure had a lot of trouble in those THIRTY rounds of boxing.

Especially one with no fights or acclimatisation at Heavyweight, not even a tuneup. About 6-1 Spinks was i think, i bet Larry wasn't that low in the rematch.

I was impressed with the way Larry got up for the rematch (clearly took it imo) but ultimate props have to go to Spinks for the first fight, a GREAT effort, even if it was against an aging Holmes.
