Just watched Cotto-Margarito II again and my god is Smoger not the greatest ref in the game? It was like he wasn't even in the ring, just let the guys fight, never broke up action or screamed at either guy or dictated any of the fight. He was also extremely clear with any breaks in action for time out-time in's and such. Think of all the great fights he's refed and how the fights would have ended had there been a different ref... On another note, the ref from the Khan-Peterson fight should never work again. Him and Cortez should be thrown under the nearest tram...
He's generally good for the reasons you stated. Occasionally lets fighters take more punishment than what's necessary though.
Smoger is brilliant. The proof is that whoever commentates only has to mention his name a maximum of twice during the whole fight. 'This bout will be officiated by Steve Smoger' and 'Great stoppage by Steve Smoger.'
He's the best. But why does he kiss fighters? I think he's gay, but I still like him & think he's the best. He was on that online radio boxing show "Through the Ropes" awhile back & I called in & asked him if he could recall the KO by Pavlik over Taylor. He talked about that KO for almost 5 minutes!
Smoger is the man, but I was impressed with Cooper not putting up with Khan's bull**** holding and shoving in his pathetic attempts to keep from infighting.
