Not even close? Szpilka is a brawler, just like Mollo is. He is always open for counters and is always off balance after missing with anything other than a jab.
Szpilka is entertaining to watch, but a skilled boxer he is not. When Mollo was at his most active, he was far ahead of where Szpilka is now.
Mollo hadn't fought in over two years and is a shot never-was, yet he still nearly KO'd the supremely skilled Szpilka.

wow i am surprised people are saying the Ref was horrible...

personally i was really impressed by the reff, he had an ugly situation on his hands that he kept under control, that fight could have ended up really dirty (more so than it was). This is one of the few fights i was truelly impressed with the Ref, he was load, clear and tried to keep the fight as clean as possible.

I was impressec by Spilka on some aspects, like his heart and his Chin (hear me out)... he took some flush shots that would have put most heavyweights on their ass... some into a momentary comma... but he got up and kept on fighting. His defense on the other hand is another issue. His flicker of a jab was also impressive.

I don't know how far he will go but he will be top contender, so far he is giving it his all fighting tough opposition from the begining. His 13 wins are worth twice as much as Wilders 27 wins (i like both fighters but can't deny wilders lack of opposition)

In my opinion, you couldn't be farther off the mark. But whatever, everyone will view things differently, that's for sure. Maybe I'm wrong but to me mollo isn't more skilled and artur isn't this brawler you're making him out to be.
But I could be wrong, no question.

And who said he was 'supremely skilled' :patsch no need to be a smartass

Watched the fight and wasn't very impressed with Szpilka. He was constantly wide open to get countered, and many times just fought ugly throwing these huge swinging punches. He was doing his best when he would jab and follow it up with something.

He seems to have the tools, but so far is still missing the skills as of now. He is still very young at 23 and has much time to improve his form , mistakes, and gain those still missing skills. Time will tell how he will end up. For a guy with only 13 fights, and 23 years old he isn't doing terrible, but has a lot he needs to work on if he wants to get serious and call out guys like Mago.

Szpilka's defensive flaws would have less of an impact against a fellow southpaw in Mago. Right now it would be a near 50/50 fight, probably a slight edge to Mago as both guys have the power to hurt eachother and defensive flaws but in a year if Szpilka continues to improve that could change.

His defense is good from the outside but when he moves in to land punches he doesnt bring his hands back up to protect himself especially his right or move his head. He has the headmovement and reflexes to do it which he shows on the outside he just needs to apply it in the pocket. Also going to the ropes against Mollo or god forbid someone like Mago is not a good idea made worse by keeping his hands down. It shouldn't be that difficult to fix if he commits to it.

Lets not forget the dude has had a whopping 12 fights before this.

What kind of amature was he? Lots of fights?

This was his 8th fight at HW post prison other ones were at CW. He had an amateur career but not very extensive, no real international experience and he turned pro at 18 or 19.

I just hope he remains dedicated, and focused. Sometimes guys like him let their personal life undermine their potential in the ring.

Hope thats not the case with him.

Im glad hes staying active, I hope he continues to improve.

You dont take a point away in a fight like this from a pushdown all the while having given no previous warnings for such. You also dont cuss at the fighters.

You want the fighters to respect you as the professional in there you act like one.

Yup, his jab is good.... he can use that down the line as an awesome base to work off of. As much as he uses is, he doesnt use it enough. Thats how important it can become to him.

And totally right about his 13 wins.

I agree with the above. Against a guy like Mago, who hits harder then Mollo who has been out of the ring for 2 years, Szpilka can't afford to have such holes in his defense and be wide open after throwing those bombs he tries to rip his opponents head off with. I'm not even going to mention Wilder as I think he is full of ****.. I don't know if his psychiatrist advised him to beat up on tomatos to help him gain confidence in himself or what it is.. but anyways... I've seen a couple of fights with Szpilka now where he seems to just try to take his opponent out, instead of waiting for the KO to come to him. His trainer has mentioned him leaning against the ropes and getting trapped up there, also talked about fixing him keeping his hands so low, I read it somewhere. Hopefully they get on it. At times Szpilka can look very crude, but as mentioned I think he has the athletic ability, just lacks the training for now. But there was some progress against Mollo, when he was using the jab it looked pretty effective, hope to see more of that.

The intensity he brings into the ring with him is something else as well.

I agree for the most part, but I see another big flaw in Szpilka, even when fighting on the outside: He telegraphs his punches pretty badly. Also, while he does have surprisingly good head movement, that movement seems to disappear when he attacks. (Same with Tyson Fury.) He tends to land a combo, then stay inside admiring his work.

Even worse, he leads with his chin. (Like Wilder sometimes does.)

Given Szpilka's fairly short reach (not listed, but I'm guessing under 80") this is a very bad thing. He's going to get countered a LOT when he steps up.

Still, he's young enough that a good trainer might turn him into something meaningful. Who trains him, anyway?
    -------------------

Comparing Sz to Mago, Mago is not quite as fast of nimble of head, but he keeps his head back when moving in for an opening. Also, while he rarely move away after a flurry, he does typically cover up. He thinks defense and offense at the same time.

Right now if those two fought, I wouldn't even try to call it, but in a few years I could easily see Szpilka improving to the point of owning Mago. (not just because of the age difference.) - but he HAS to fix those flaws, and fast.

Thats what made his finishing shots against Mollo so good.... and I think he would do better if he did more of it, they were straight, sharp punches down the center.

If he used his jab more, focused on sharp, straight punches down the center, and worked hard on on the rope defense in the gym, and in the pocket D, he could very well shape into a solid contender.
